Next Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 Update to Remove Guitar Hero Easter Egg

The newly launched game, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, developed by Activision and Iron Galaxy, is brimming with Easter eggs. These include hidden characters like Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as a skate session in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom, home to SpongeBob Squarepants. The game is rich with references. However, one particular reference linked to one of Activision’s iconic but inactive franchises has been deemed disrespectful and will be taken out in the upcoming update for the game.

While scrolling through the THPS subreddit, I stumbled upon a post by user will-powers that caught my eye. It featured what appears to be a Guitar Hero box casually tossed in a trash can, seemingly hidden away on the new Waterpark level from the THPS 3 + 4 remake. Now, it might just be a fun Easter egg placed by Iron Galaxy, but some members of our gaming community are taking offense to this, seeing it as a disregard for the original developers, Neversoft.

In the post, the developers mentioned that they are currently looking into why the box appeared, and plan to take it out in the upcoming update.

In their statement, Iron Galaxy expressed deep respect for game creators and are currently figuring out how an unwanted element ended up there. They appreciate the community’s vigilance and assure everyone that they will eliminate this issue in the upcoming update by modifying the environmental art.

In the same post, certain players were given a detailed view of a Guitar Hero package, a clear reference to the well-known rhythm game series. The hidden reference in THPS 3 + 4, named Banjo Champion, even sports a Neversoft logo on its packaging.

It’s interesting to note that the Easter egg for Guitar Hero originated from the Activision and Vicarious Visions release, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. A Reddit post from five years ago showcases an image of similar boxes in the Hangar level, which is the initial level in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2.

A date and more details regarding the upcoming THPS 3 + 4 update are not yet known.

Despite facing some debates on various aspects of THPS 3 + 4, the game has been generally well-received critically. According to Metacritic, a popular review aggregator site, it garnered an average score of 82 based on 32 critic reviews. In our assessment, we awarded it a high rating of 4.5 out of 5.

Despite seemingly unfavorable circumstances, Iron Galaxy produced an impressive sequel to THPS 1+2, and one that I’m certain will keep me entertained for hours. It might not perfectly replicate two of the best video games ever made, but whether you’re a dedicated fan or a new player, THPS 3+4 is definitely worth checking out.

The games THPS 3 and 4 are currently playable on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, the new Nintendo Switch, and the original Nintendo Switch, as well as PC platforms. If you’re an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, you can enjoy this game within your membership package.
