Though Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 performed well at The Game Awards, the Steam Awards voters chose a different Game of the Year. Expedition 33 did win the award for Best Soundtrack, but another highly awaited game ultimately took home the GOTY title.
Hollow Knight: Silksong won the top award at the official Steam Awards, after not winning at The Game Awards in December. Other games competing for Game of the Year were ARC Raiders, Dispatch, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Silksong also won the ‘Best Game You Suck At’ award, which playfully recognizes how challenging the game is.

Despite not winning Game of the Year, Hollow Knight: Silksong was a big winner at recent awards, actually taking home more than one prize. This is quite different from The Game Awards, where it won Best Action-Adventure Game, but Team Cherry didn’t attend because they didn’t anticipate winning the top award.
The Steam Awards Have Some Solid Wins

Both Hollow Knight: Silksong and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are worthy Game of the Year winners, so I’m happy with the results from both Steam and The Game Awards. However, the variety of winners on Steam does point out a flaw in The Game Awards – the overlap in categories meant Expedition 33 received a lot of stage time. It feels repetitive to award a game for Game of the Year, Best Independent Game, and Best Debut Independent Game, and it’s debatable whether a game that’s more of a mid-budget title should be considered ‘indie’ at all.
Generally, the winners chosen by the Steam community aren’t surprising – that’s typical when so many people vote. It’s hard to disagree with the results, and it’s great to see Hollow Knight: Silksong recognized. However, it would have been good to see some lesser-known, excellent games like Despelote get more attention.
