It was Kathleen Mangione who reported her son as missing on November 18, several weeks prior to his arrest at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania on December 4. This 26-year-old individual was subsequently charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which took place on December 4, based on a missing persons report obtained by NBC News.
Kathleen submitted a report in San Francisco, detailing her conversation with Luigi on July 1st and his employment at TrueCar, an online car dealership.
Nevertheless, the report mentioned that the specified location is now “permanently shut down” and the “primary contact number is no longer in service.” Additionally, it stated that Kathleen remains unaware of Luigi’s regular haunts.
Immediately following his December 9th detention, a statement was released by his family (which was obtained by NBC News), expressing shock at the news. However, they mentioned that their knowledge about the situation was limited to what they had learned from the media reports.
Our family is deeply shaken and saddened by Luigi’s arrest.” They went on to express their sympathies towards the family of Brian Thompson, urging everyone to keep them in their prayers. They also asked that everyone should pray for all those affected by this situation.
David B. Irwin, legal representative for the Mangione family, released an updated statement to TMZ, expressing their affection for Luigi and hoping for his well-being.
The lawyer mentioned that his family members are yet to learn all the details, and they are following the progress of the Ivy League graduate’s case by reading about it in the news.
Regarding Luigi, not only is he facing a murder accusation in New York, but he’s also been charged in Pennsylvania with illegal gun possession and forgery.
On the other hand, Thomas Dickey, who represents him in Pennsylvania, informed reporters on December 10th that his client plans to plead not guilty in both jurisdictions.
His legal representative noted, “I haven’t found any proof that he is the one who pulled the trigger.” Keep in mind, and this is significant: A core principle of American justice is assuming innocence until guilt can be conclusively proven. At this stage, I have not come across any such evidence.

Brian Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. He first joined the company in 2004 and held several positions before taking on the role of CEO in 2021.
Prior to working at UnitedHealthcare, Thompson was employed at PwC, according to his LinkedIn profile. He also graduated with honors from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration as an accounting major in May 1997, the school’s public relations manager Steve Schmadeke told NBC News.
Thompson, who lived in Minnesota, was married to Paulette Thompson—though according to public records viewed by TopMob News, they had been living in separate homes—and was the father of two sons.
He was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 4, 2024. Thompson was 50 years old.
6:46 a.m. on December 4, 2024, NYPD patrol officers from the Midtown North Precinct were dispatched to a shooting incident outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, as reported by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny in a press briefing later that morning. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered gunshot wounds on Thompson’s back and leg. The CEO was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West Hospital at 7:12 a.m., according to the chief detective.
As per Kenny’s account, the shooter made his way to the New York Hilton Midtown on foot and arrived before Thompson, who was there for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference. At 6:44 a.m., Thompson was spotted walking alone towards the Hilton after leaving another nearby hotel. The shooter, disregarding other pedestrians, approached Thompson from behind, fired shots at him, continued shooting, and then left on foot before hopping onto an ebike. After this, the gunman was seen entering Central Park at Center Drive at 6:48 a.m. During the investigation, three live nine-millimeter rounds and three empty shell casings were found. Interestingly, the words “depose,” “delay,” and “deny” were scrawled on one of the shell casings with marker. However, Kenny clarified that the motive behind this shooting remains unconfirmed as of now.
During the press conference on December 6, Kenny revealed that investigators possess footage of the gunman arriving at Port Authority in New York City on November 24. He further stated that the bus suspected to have carried the shooter originated from Atlanta, making multiple stops along the way, so they’re unsure where exactly he boarded the bus.
At a press conference on December 4th, Kenny described the shooter as a male with fair skin who was wearing a light-colored jacket, a black face mask, sneakers that were black and white, and a unique gray backpack. Over the following days, the NYPD released a sequence of pictures of the suspect, many of which showed his face concealed due to the mask.
On December 9, the Altoona Police Department in Pennsylvania apprehended Luigi Mangione on gun-related charges. According to a criminal record obtained by NBC News, these charges include two felonies: one for forgery and one for unlicensed firearm possession, along with three misdemeanors: tampering with records or identification, possessing tools used in a crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement.
Apart from exhibiting unusual behavior, Tisch stated, Mangione was found in possession of several fake IDs, including an American passport. Moreover, during the investigation, officers discovered a firearm on him, along with a silencer, consistent with the weapon used in the murder. They also found clothing items, such as a mask similar to those worn by our suspect, and a fraudulent New Jersey ID that matched the one he had used to check into the New York hostel before the shooting. Furthermore, officers recovered a handwritten note indicating his motive and state of mind.
On December 9th, court documents show that Manhattan prosecutors have accused Mangione of murder. Additionally, he is being charged with three weapons-related offenses: two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a loaded firearm and one count of third-degree possession, which includes a silencer. He also faces a charge for possessing a forged instrument. As of now, he has not yet entered a plea for any of these charges.
As reported by NBC News, citing the NYPD, Mangione was found with three short writings totaling under 300 words upon his arrest. These writings contained phrases such as “Frankly these parasites had it coming,” suggesting he acted alone but not ruling out others involved. In the notes, Mangione expressed respect for federal agents and stated he wasn’t working with anyone, while expressing regret for any distress caused. However, his motive remains unconfirmed, according to Tisch, who noted that the writings showed anti-corporatist sentiments and issues with the healthcare industry. The specific motive will be revealed as the investigation progresses over the coming weeks and months.
