Kate Winslet’s first time directing a movie is proving to be a big hit on Netflix, and it’s continuing to gain popularity. Released on December 24th, the film—which was co-written by her son, Joe Anders—quickly landed in the platform’s Top 10, reaching number five with over 7 million views during the holidays. Winslet also stars in the movie she directed.
The film Goodbye June boasts a fantastic cast, including Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough, Helen Mirren, and Johnny Flynn. It’s a deeply emotional story about love and grief, likely to move audiences. Set during the Christmas season, the film follows a family grappling with their mother’s final days after a cancer diagnosis. As she’s in the hospital, her four adult children and their strained father are forced to confront their own issues and find a way to connect while facing the loss of the woman who holds them together.
It’s A Film About The Heart At The Center Of Grief
Kate Winslet describes her new film, Goodbye June, as a deeply personal project. She hopes audiences will connect with the story, characters, and family relationships portrayed, particularly if they’ve experienced loss. Winslet believes the film could offer comfort and encourage open conversations about grief, a topic she feels isn’t often discussed. Writer Anders explains that the story focuses on how a family can grow closer through loss, rather than be torn apart by it. He aimed to create an uplifting and emotionally releasing experience, portraying a universal experience without being overly sad.
Early reviews for the film are varied, with many critics noting an imbalance between its comedic and emotional elements. Coleman Spilde from Salon commented that while the film isn’t bad, it could have been much more compelling. Dionar Hildalgo of Algo Más Que Cine concurred, praising the performances of Helen Mirren and Florence Riseborough in what is a genuine family drama, but criticizing the film’s careful direction and predictable storyline. While Kate Winslet shows potential as a director, the film ultimately feels too safe.
