Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ Superman is outperforming box office projections. The debut of the new DC Universe has started on a strong note, as Superman surpassed its initial forecast of $122 million, earning $125 million instead. Initial predictions suggested the movie would perform below expectations on Sunday, but the superhero film managed to rake in a robust $30.8 million on that day. The film saw only a minimal drop of 18% from the previous day. What’s more impressive is that the movie is projected to have an even stronger second weekend, with experts estimating a whopping $62.5 million for its second weekend.
Next week, the movie is expected to face limited competition, as this week’s major releases include a new Smurfs film, Eddington, and a remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer. In comparison, Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four will be the only real contender for the top spot at the box office in July, hitting theaters on the 25th. However, before that, Superman is expected to continue its reign at the box office. This victory is particularly significant for DC Studios, as they work to rebuild the DC Universe on the big screen following the Snyder-verse.
James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, has penned and directed the latest Superman movie. Recently, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, expressed his delight over Gunn’s creative direction for the film. Zaslav was particularly pleased to see Gunn’s vision materialize, as well as the plans Gunn and Safran have laid out for the next decade of the DC Universe.
Over the weekend, we enjoyed watching Superman take flight, as James Gunn’s enthusiasm and creativity unfolded magnificently on the cinema screen. In a statement to the media, Zaslav expressed that Superman is merely the beginning.
Although Superman’s movie series continues to perform well at the box office, it doesn’t necessarily mean there will be a direct sequel. In fact, Gunn hinted that Superman might show up in different movies instead of just a Superman 2. Gunn and Safran have already planned out the next decade of the DC Universe, so they probably know when and where David Corenswet will reappear as Superman, but they haven’t revealed which project it will be yet. After all, the DC Universe only has a few confirmed projects in development at this point. It seems that Gunn is focusing on telling a good story instead of making a movie just because it’s what people expect.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be witnessing Corenswet bring Superman to life, Nicholas Hoult transform into Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan embody Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi breathe life into Mr. Terrific, Nathan Fillion take on Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced soar as Hawkgirl, and Skyler Gisondo step into the shoes of Jimmy Olsen in this upcoming film!
Fans can anticipate what new adventures await Superman when he graces the silver screen again, as planned by Gunn and Safran. Meanwhile, for now, audiences can catch him only in cinemas. In the DC Universe’s lineup, the upcoming film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has completed production last month. Following this, it is expected that HBO Max’s “Lanterns ” and the big screen movie featuring Clayface will follow suit.
