Alex Proyas and The Crow (1994)
The gothic film ‘The Crow’ was a success when it came out in 1994, earning $50 million at the box office. However, the film was overshadowed by tragedy: its star, Brandon Lee (Bruce Lee’s son), died in a shooting accident on set. The director, Alex Proyas, was deeply shaken by the event. Proyas, known for his music video work, needed several years to recover, and didn’t direct another feature film for four years.
The sequels…
The original film, The Crow, was a hit in theaters, leading to a sequel in 1996 that was poorly received and earned only $17 million. A TV series followed in 1998, lasting just one season despite positive reviews. Two more Crow films were released in 2000 and 2005, both to negative reviews. In 2022, a reboot directed by Rupert Sanders – known for visually striking films like 2017’s Ghost in the Shell and 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman – was made, starring Bill Skarsgard, who previously played Pennywise in It. However, this film was delayed for two years and ultimately released in 2024, where it, like its predecessors, didn’t perform well at the box office, earning just $24 million.
