Grey’s Anatomy’s Steven W. Bailey Diagnosed With Neuromuscular Disorder

Steven W. Bailey, known for playing Joe on Grey’s Anatomy, recently shared that he has been diagnosed with a rare muscle condition called Congenital Myasthenia Syndrome (CMS).

The 54-year-old actor recently revealed on X that he’s been living with a condition that’s impacted both his personal life and work. This condition, called Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome (CMS), is a genetic disorder that disrupts communication between the brain and muscles, leading to weakness that gets worse with use. Doctors explain that CMS can gradually make everyday activities like walking or lifting things more challenging.

Bailey shared that the disease has progressed to the point where he uses a wheelchair. Despite this, he can still walk short distances and continues to act. He joked that he’s still capable of being outspoken and assertive – ‘objecting to the judge, disrupting a town meeting, or even yelling at a reckless police officer.’ He also plans to focus on roles that acknowledge his condition, believing it’s crucial for accurate and meaningful representation of people with disabilities in film and television.

Even though he’s been diagnosed with a serious illness, the actor is keeping a positive attitude and using humor to connect with fans. He playfully mentioned that his diagnosis meant he could skip chores like dishes and laundry. He ended his message by letting everyone know he hasn’t changed, and is still the same person and artist he always was, simply adding, “Same guy. Same actor. Same artist. Now with wheels.”

After revealing his diagnosis, he was overwhelmed with support from his fans. Many shared messages online praising his honesty and strength, and expressed hope that he’ll continue to succeed as an actor.

Most people recognize Bailey for playing Joe, the bar owner on Grey’s Anatomy, where he appeared in over 30 episodes. He’s also been a guest star on many other popular TV shows, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NCIS, Angel, Modern Family, Scandal, Chicago Fire, You, and Swiped.
