The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges, cancelled after just two seasons

As a long-time movie enthusiast who has seen more than a few shows get the axe prematurely, I must say that the news of The Old Man’s cancellation after its second season is rather disheartening. With its stellar cast, critical acclaim, and impressive viewership numbers, it seemed destined for greatness.

Despite garnering record viewership as the most-watched FX series premiere on Hulu during its opening weekend, it appears that The Old Man’s run has been discontinued following its second season.

Based on Deadline’s reports, it appears that FX has not yet decided to continue the series for a third season. At this point, FX hasn’t issued any official statement about the matter.

The show, sharing its title with Thomas Perry’s top-selling novel, features acting talents such as Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. It has garnered three Critics Choice TV nominations in the categories of Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Bridges, and Best Supporting Actor for Lithgow.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that this series boasts an outstanding cast alongside me, including John Lithgow, Jeff Bridges, Alia Shawkat, Navid Negahban, Jacqueline Antaramian, Amy Brenneman, and Gbenga Akinnagbe. What a star-studded lineup!

Before the debut of Season 2, co-creator Jonathan E Steinberg hinted during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter), that the conclusion might not tie up all loose ends cleanly.

“I have thought about a number of different ways that it could end,” said Steinberg.

I think stories should be allowed to end naturally, not artificially extended. However, this series feels different – it seems as though it still has much more to express.
