As a lifelong fan of British television and a seasoned quizzer myself, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the return of Bullseye this Christmas! Having grown up watching Jim Bowen and his iconic catchphrases, it’s a delight to see the show being reimagined with Freddie Flintoff at the helm.
Once again, Bullseye graces our screens with a fresh host and updated stage, yet retaining the cherished format of accumulating points and winning enticing prizes that fans have grown to adore.
Initially airing in 1981, the popular British game show garnered immense popularity among viewers at home, remaining on-air for an impressive 14-year run before being taken off the schedule, with Jim Bowen as its host.
Following a short comeback in 2006, ITV once again holds the rights to the dart-themed television program, and has recruited Freddie Flintoff to serve as the host for this upcoming holiday edition.
To make it clearer for those who are unfamiliar, let’s break down the specifics of the upcoming event – the rules and the significant rewards included. So, how does Bullseye actually function?
How does Bullseye work?
Three teams, made up of a casual dart player paired with a trivia enthusiast, compete against one another to claim various rewards.
The game is played in four rounds.
Bully’s Category Board
In the initial round, the teams aim darts at Bully’s Subject Categorization Board. Each section of the board corresponds to a distinct area of expertise that the contestant will later be questioned about.
As a passionate film buff, I eagerly anticipate the category reveal before my teammate takes aim with the dart. If our dart lands on the targeted section, we pocket some cold hard cash. Correct answers to trivia questions also add to our winnings, and every bullseye strike multiplies our earnings!
Pounds for Points
In the game called “Pounds for Points,” each participant takes turns throwing three darts at a regular dartboard. The one who scores the highest gets to pose a question that their teammate must then answer.
If they get it right, then the team earn £1 for every point on the dart board. If they get the question wrong, it is passed to the next highest-ranking team, giving them the opportunity to nab the cash.
After this round, the highest-earning team are sent through to Bully’s Prize Board.
In addition to the cash they’ve earned during the show, each competing team gets to take home prizes too, such as the popular “Bendy Bully” toy representing the show’s mascot.
Bully’s Prize Board
In this crucial phase, the surviving team encounters a board split into eight sections, some red and some black, with varying sizes. A target is located right in the center.
As a passionate cinephile, let me rephrase it in a way that reflects our shared love for movies: In this game, two teams are competing, with me (the one who’s always ready for a new flick) tossing the first three darts, followed by my trivia-whiz teammate. After that, the baton gets passed back to me for the next set of three shots. Finally, I take over for the last three darts, aiming to secure the win for our team in this thrilling competition!
The goal is to touch down on multiple red sections, each offering a distinct reward. However, it’s crucial to avoid the black areas, as they yield no benefit. Moreover, if a segment is landed on twice, the prize will be forfeited unless it’s hit again for a third time.
If they hit the target exactly, they immediately receive Bully’s Exceptional Reward, a prize that often comes with a substantial amount of money.
Bully’s Star Prize Gamble
Once they’ve finished throwing their nine darts, the competitors have two options: take home the prizes they’ve already won, or risk it all to potentially uncover an additional secret prize concealed behind a screen in the studio.
The prize is not revealed until the game is played but have previously included a holiday, a speedboat, or Bully’s Treasure Chest containing a cash prize.
As a dedicated fan, I’m excited about the prospect that our dynamic duo could be taking on the challenge! Here’s what I gather: If they accept, each team member will receive three darts to throw. To claim the grand prize, they must score over 101 points collectively. Plus, they get to keep all the other prizes they’ve earned during the show’s exciting journey. Let’s hope they give it their best shot!
Should their team fall short, they’ll return empty-handed, taking with them merely the commemorative trinkets bestowed upon all competitors, even the Bendy Bully squad.
Should the victorious team opt against taking a risk, the runner-up with the second highest earnings is invited back for another opportunity. If they decline, then the mantle is passed onto team number three.
What celebrities will appear on Bullseye?
During the Christmas special, Freddie Flintoff will be accompanied by the remarkable Luke “The Nuke” Littler, a 17-year-old prodigy in darts who gained prominence when he made it to the finals of the PDC World Darts Championship at the start of this year and has been consistently improving ever since.
He’ll serve as the star guest host for the charity darts event, where famous personalities and professional dart players compete to raise funds for their chosen charities.
By aiming darts at the matchplay board, Luke will secure funds for his preferred charity, with each point earned contributing to this total amount.
