IO Interactive, the team behind the Hitman games, seems like the perfect choice to create a James Bond game – and even the developers of a previous 007 title, First Light, appear to think so.
Originally known as ‘Project 007’, the game was officially revealed in June 2025. It’s the first James Bond game to be officially licensed in over a decade, following the poorly received 007 Legends in 2012, and should provide some entertainment while fans wait for the next Bond movie.
So, they’re letting me play as Bond in a new action-adventure game, and honestly, if you’ve spent any time with a game like Hitman, you’ll immediately get what it’s all about. It feels a lot like that – a spy game focused on action and stealth.
In a recent interview with TopMob Gaming, Theuns Smit, the senior producer of 007 First Light, discussed the experience of working on the game and why IO Interactive was a great choice to develop it.
As many of you know, we at IO Interactive have been creating immersive agent experiences for over 25 years. That gives us a wealth of past work to build upon.
Look, James Bond is the classic spy, right? So when we got the chance to work on it, it felt like a perfect fit. It was awesome being able to take our own style and really make it our own within that world.

Regarding comparisons to the Hitman series, Smit explained that while their work on Hitman will definitely inform 007 First Light, this new game also allows the team to explore new creative directions.
Working on ‘007 First Light’ was a really enjoyable experience because we were eager to try something fresh and unique.
While we bring our experience to the table, we still prioritize a creative approach and let you guide how we achieve your goals.
He explained that Agent 47 embodies chaos, which is very different from James Bond. He believes this doesn’t fit Bond’s established character or the spirit of the franchise.
We also wanted to handle that situation with care. There will be times when enemies attack with everything they have, and when they do, that’s when you respond with equal force to defend yourself and survive.
007 First Light releases on 27th May 2026 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.
