Instead of effortlessly replicating the magic of hit films like “Independence Day: Resurgence” and “Zoolander 2,” or creating disasters such as “Jaws: The Revenge” and “Speed 2: Cruise Control,” some movie sequels struggle to match the success of their predecessors. However, there are exceptions – films that, while not flawless, initially received negative reviews but have since gained a dedicated fanbase that rivals, if not quite surpasses, that of the original film. These are the sequels we’ll be discussing.
These films might not necessarily be considered masterpieces of high art, but they do possess a certain value that’s worth acknowledging. Ranging from chilling xenomorph horror films set within prisons to thrilling web-slinging adventures, the movies listed below can be considered significant additions to their respective franchises.
Alien³ (1992)
Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and James Cameron’s “Aliens” are almost flawless movies, and it should be noted that David Fincher’s (or, more accurately, 20th Century Fox executives’) “Alien 3” doesn’t compare to them. Despite the chaotic production process, “Alien 3” could have easily become a complete disaster instead of a somewhat dull retread of familiar territory.
After making that point clear, it’s worth mentioning that the movie pushes the franchise into some intriguing new territories. In essence, there are several aspects of the film that excel quite impressively. For instance, the xenomorph is beautifully captured in a few outstanding shots, the setting has an eerie, captivating atmosphere, and Ellen Ripley receives a fitting conclusion to her story. Moreover, it’s significantly superior to “Alien Resurrection” and the dreadful “AVP” films that came afterward.
Jaws 2 (1978)
Adjusted for inflation, “Jaws” would be among the top movies to gross over $1 billion at the global box office. Although “Jaws 2” was also a significant success (approximately $900 million worldwide when adjusted), it didn’t achieve the critical or commercial impact of the original. However, it’s important to note that both “Jaws 3” and “Jaws: The Revenge” paled in comparison. While “Jaws 2” might have evolved into a slasher movie with a shark instead of a masked killer, its concept of trapping teens on small boats as the colossal shark circles worked effectively.
At a minimum, “Jaws 2” might just have the best tagline for any sequel in history. However, the memorable tagline “Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water,” is not the only factor that makes “Jaws 2” a worthy film. The skilled performances of cast members Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary, and Murray Hamilton, the iconic water-skiing scene, and the unique burnt appearance of the shark all contribute to its success. Compared to the other sequels, “Jaws 2” clearly stands out in terms of quality.
RoboCop 2 (1990)
Paul Verhoeven’s “RoboCop” stands out as an extraordinary masterpiece. A fearless genre fusion, it ranks among the 1980s’ most insightful and stimulating films. Compared to its sequel, “RoboCop 2,” which was released three years later, it plays as both a less vibrant replica of the original and a slight advancement.
In essence, “RoboCop 2” embodies a typical style seen in comic book movies, given that it was partially scripted by Frank Miller, renowned for his works like “Sin City” and “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns”. Although not every aspect of Miller’s conceptualization found its way into the final cut, sufficient elements were incorporated to make it one of the best sequels possible for “RoboCop”. It largely maintains the original’s gritty tone and intense violence, and the return of Peter Weller is a definite plus. Furthermore, its exploration of corporate deceit is quite amusing. As demonstrated by “RoboCop 3” and the 2014 remake, there could be many less desirable cinematic journeys for Officer Murphy compared to Irvin Kershner’s sequel.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
While it may not match up to “Spider-Man 2” in most aspects, Sam Raimi’s final installment shouldn’t receive as much criticism as it has. There are certainly parts that fall short, such as the awkward dance scene, James Franco’s portrayal, and the overall overloaded feel of the movie. However, there are enough redeeming qualities to make it a decent choice for a relaxed weekend viewing.
Among all the elements that make “Spider-Man 3” shine, I’d say it’s my personal favorite is the remarkable performance by Thomas Haden Church as the Sandman. His portrayal carries a poignant weight and depth, suggesting that this character was undoubtedly Sam Raimi’s focus of interest. To top it off, some seamlessly choreographed action sequences elevate “Spider-Man 3” above its 2007 superhero film counterparts like “Ghost Rider” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
2019’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” finally provided a fitting continuation for the first two James Cameron-directed “Terminator” movies, but the less successful 2003 film appears more acceptable now in light of previous attempts like “Terminator Salvation” (2009) and “Terminator Genisys” (2015). The third movie follows closely in the footsteps of Cameron’s films, although some comedic moments are a bit jarring (“Talk to the hand,” for example). However, it generally offers an enjoyable, mindless blockbuster experience.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me tell you that this film packs quite a punch with an impressive, well-executed battle between cyborgs, a heart-pounding car chase sequence, and outstanding performances by Nick Stahl, Claire Danes, and none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger. And don’t get me started on the T-X from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines – it’s a far more captivating antagonist compared to the mangled portrayal of John Connor in Genisys.
Which other underrated sequels do you consider noteworthy? Here’s an interesting take on why the least popular moment in Jurassic Park III has turned into a cult classic!
