The cozy mystery series “Father Brown,” inspired by the works of G K Chesterton and featuring Mark Williams, returns for its twelfth season. As usual, it’s packed with new mysteries, personal struggles, and an array of special guests.
Over time, the television show has undergone numerous transformations, even swapping out key actors, yet one consistent element remains – the breathtaking landscapes, owing to its picturesque village backdrop.
In contrast to Chesterton’s books, which are set across various parts of the country, where exactly does the on-screen adaptation of Father Brown take place, and where were its scenic shots filmed?
Read on for everything you need to know about the filming locations and setting for Father Brown.
Where is Father Brown set?
The show “Father Brown” takes place in a charming, imaginary town named Kembleford, situated within the scenic region of the Cotswolds, specifically in Gloucestershire.
Unlike G K Chesterton’s short stories that serve as the basis for the series, the setting for Brown initially is the parish of Cobhole in Essex. Later, he moves to London, but the events unfold throughout England and beyond, chronicling Brown’s journeys.
In the lead-up to the premiere of the show’s first season, producer Ceri Meyrick revealed the reason behind the change, stating: “We aimed to create a familiar setting for viewers to revisit weekly. Additionally, it was necessary for us to shoot in close proximity to our production base in Birmingham.
The Cotswolds boasts a breathtaking beauty that is perfect for filming periods due to its lack of contemporary architecture. Unfortunately, our budget didn’t allow us to travel to Mexico, New York, or any other locations suggested by G K for Father Brown.
Where is Father Brown filmed?
The majority of the outdoor sequences for this series are filmed in and nearby the picturesque regions of Cotswolds and Gloucestershire. Notably, the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Blockley stands in for Father Brown’s personal church, while St Mary’s Catholic Church in Kembleford serves as the show’s Kembleford parish church.
Among the enchanting locales that have caught my eye in Gloucestershire are the village of Guiting Power, Upper Slaughter, the historic Moreton-in-Marsh hospital, the captivating Sudeley Castle, and Winchcombe Railway Station. In neighboring Warwickshire, I’ve also found myself drawn to Ilmington.
The series was shot at various spots across Oxfordshire, such as Kirtlington Park, Chastleton House, Bloxham School, and Broughton Castle.
Prior to the airing of the eighth season in 2020, producer Peter Bullock disclosed some filming locations from that season. These included Kirtlington House in Oxfordshire, Worcester Cathedral, the Cornwell Estate, and Upton House.
We’ve visited Cropredy’s canals and revisited our favorite spots in Blockley, which is known as Kembleford. In addition to these outdoor locations, we also film in pre-set indoor locations such as the presbytery kitchen, study, and police station interior, all found within a studio in Evesham. Over the course of 14 weeks, we manage to cover quite a bit of the Cotswolds while filming.
