Over the past year, Pocketpair’s reputation has significantly expanded. While the company has gained much attention for its recent project, Palworld, it’s important to note that this isn’t their debut game. That distinction belongs to Overdungeon, which they describe as a blend of roguelike, tower defense, and card games. Since 2019, this game has been accessible on Steam and has garnered a generally positive response from users. Now, over five years after its initial release, Overdungeon is finally available on the Nintendo Switch, making it the first time the game has ever been playable on a console.
Although Overdungeon may not create as much buzz as the anticipated Palworld launch on Nintendo Switch, it could still capture the interest of enthusiasts who enjoy deck-building games similar to Slay the Spire. The Steam feedback for Overdungeon often mentions its resemblance to these two games, making it intriguing to observe if Nintendo Switch users will take a liking to it. At the moment, the game is available for $14.99 on the eShop, and you can watch the trailer for it below.
It’s somewhat unexpected that the game Overdungeon has been launched on Switch, considering the ongoing tensions between Nintendo and Pocketpair. Last year, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company filed a joint lawsuit against Pocketpair over their game Palworld. They claim that Pocketpair’s game infringes multiple patents, particularly those related to the use of Poke Balls. Recently, Pocketpair modified Palworld, changing how Pals are summoned from Pal Spheres, making it less similar to Pokemon. Whether this alteration is a step towards reconciling with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, or if more changes are on the horizon, remains unclear at this point.
Initially, Pocketpair expressed hope that they might launch the game Palworld on a Nintendo platform, but it appeared there could be tension between the two firms. However, it turns out that a Pocketpair creation is now available for purchase on the Switch. This may not have been expected by many Switch users, yet here we are. To clarify, Nintendo has generally shown leniency regarding content published on the Switch eShop, given the variety of imitations and low-quality offerings some developers have put out. It’s also plausible that these plans were already underway before the lawsuit was filed.
With Overdungeon now available on the Nintendo Switch, there’s speculation about whether we might expect more titles from the developer in the future. Games like Craftopia or even Palworld could potentially be in the pipeline. If Pocketpair manages to make the necessary changes to resolve the lawsuit and if Nintendo agrees to list their games on the eShop, it’s possible that these games could appear on the Switch 2. It would certainly be an interesting resolution to the legal disputes.
