IT Director Reveals How Many Seasons Are Planned for Welcome to Derry (And When They Take Place)

The planned HBO series titled “IT: Welcome to Derry” has a clear number of seasons laid out, following the storyline. This series serves as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 IT movies directed by Andy Muschietti, which were inspired by Stephen King’s horror novel of the same name. In an interview with Radio TU, Muschietti expressed his intent for the show to span over at least three seasons.

As a cinephile, I’d rephrase it as: “The narrative we’re crafting draws heavily from the interludes found in the book. These interludes serve as Mike Hanlon’s research chapters, shedding light on pivotal historical disasters. From the Black Spot fire to the Bradley Gang massacre, a ’30s bank robbers gang, and the Kitchener Ironworks explosion – these events are integral to the storyline. You see, each time Pennywise emerges from his slumber, a catastrophic event marks the start of a new cycle. Our upcoming series will be divided into three seasons, each focusing on one of these significant historical disasters.

Director Muschietti also mentioned that the series “Welcome to Derry” will unfold in reverse order. He explained, “The story is intentionally told backward. So, the first season takes place in 1962, the second season in 1935, and the third season in 1908.

Stepping into the shoes of a movie critic, I can’t help but express my anticipation for “Welcome to Derry.” With the chilling legacy of Pennywise terrorizing the townsfolk of Derry, this film offers a unique opportunity to delve into the monstrous history of this terrifying character across distinct 20th-century timeframes.

What makes this project even more intriguing is the return of Andy and Barbara Muschietti as co-creators, having previously worked on “Welcome to Derry” and its sister film “IT CHAPTER TWO.” Joining them is Jason Fuchs, who served as a co-producer for “IT CHAPTER TWO.”

Lastly, the iconic performance of Pennywise the Clown by Bill Skarsgård will undoubtedly send chills down our spines once more, having left an indelible mark on audiences in the “IT” movies. So buckle up and get ready to step into Derry once again!

The movie adaptations of Stephen King’s works have had a varied success on the cinema screen, but the IT movies directed by Muschietti belong to the successful category. The first film, titled IT: Chapter One, premiered in cinemas on September 7, 2017, followed by IT CHAPTER TWO on September 6, 2019, two years later. Both IT films were blockbusters, raking in $704.2 million and $473.1 million globally, although the response to IT CHAPTER TWO was somewhat more divided. Nevertheless, these two movie adaptations of IT are among the most well-received Stephen King adaptations on the big screen.

In Stephen King’s novel, the IT movies revolve around a band of children in the town of Derry, Maine called “The Losers Club.” They face a terrifying supernatural entity that masquerades as Pennywise the Clown, targeting the town’s kids. Though it appears that the Losers successfully vanquish Pennywise, they learn that he reappears after 30 years. As adults, they come together again to permanently eliminate Pennywise from their lives.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the masterful adaptation of Stephen King’s epic novel, “IT,” by director Andrés Muschietti. Instead of attempting to squeeze such a vast story into a single movie, he cleverly divided it into two parts: the initial installment focusing on the Losers Club as they bravely faced their nemesis as children, and the sequel, titled “IT CHAPTER TWO,” delving into their harrowing confrontation with Pennywise as adults. Interestingly, while the Losers won’t be revisiting Derry again in the upcoming film “Welcome to Derry,” we can certainly anticipate Bill Skarsgård’s chilling return as Pennywise, promising a fresh dose of terror and exhilaration from the big-screen “IT” movies across different time periods. If the response to “IT: Welcome to Derry” is overwhelmingly positive on HBO, it’s not unimaginable that this series may surpass Muschietti’s stated three-season goal and continue to captivate Stephen King fans with further installments.

IT: Welcome to Derry will arrive on HBO in 2025, with Season 1 consisting of nine episodes.
