Fans of the Mass Effect series recently received a significant hint about whether Commander Shepard will be back in the next game. BioWare announced a new Mass Effect title six years ago, and it’s been even longer—since 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda—since a full game was released. We’ve seen a couple of short teaser trailers, but little concrete information. A major question has remained: will Commander Shepard return, and if so, how important will their role be? For fans hoping Shepard will be a central character, the news might not be what they want to hear.
Jennifer Hale, who voiced female Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect games, recently shared her thoughts on the series’ future. She expressed both optimism and concern, particularly regarding the potential sale of EA to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Hale worries about how this acquisition might affect BioWare’s creative culture and values. She likely wouldn’t have voiced these concerns publicly if she was currently working closely with both BioWare and EA, but this is just speculation. She also hinted at something more substantial regarding the future of the series, though details remain unclear.
Is Commander Shepard Returning in Mass Effect 5?
Someone asked me what I’d love to see in the next Mass Effect game, and honestly, I think a lot of fans would agree with me! Mac Walters said his dream would be to bring Commander Shepard back, and that just made my day! It would be incredible to continue Shepard’s story.
Fans are eager to see Commander Shepard return and would love to find a way for both Mark Meer, who voices the male version of the character, and the original voice actor to exist within the same game universe. It would be amazing to have them both involved!
Okay, so this is just my take, but if Jen Hale was involved with the new game, she’d definitely be under an NDA. That means she wouldn’t be dropping hints or commenting on it, at least not obviously. But honestly, over the last few years she’s been pretty open about the game, and even mentioned BioWare hasn’t reached out to her about working on it, which is kinda weird if she was involved.
We’re still just guessing at this point, but if Commander Shepard does come back in the next game, it will likely involve the Geth in some way.
