7 Movies to Watch After Heads of State

Heads of State on Prime Video can be described as a humorous take on the buddy comedy genre, but instead of typical characters like cops or private investigators, the leads are actually two heads of state: Sam Clarke (played by Idris Elba), the Prime Minister of Britain, and Will Derringer (portrayed by John Cena), a former action movie star turned President of the United States. Their trip aboard Air Force One to a NATO summit is interrupted by terrorists, leaving them as the only survivors. With everyone else on the plane deceased, these two leaders who don’t see eye-to-eye must forge an unlikely alliance to identify the culprits behind the attack and bring them to justice.

Leaders from various nations demonstrate that not every blockbuster film during the summer’s cinema season makes it to the silver screen. Packed with exhilarating action scenes and a strong bond between Cena and Elba, this action-comedy is undoubtedly a success.

1) Novocaine

Jack Quaid’s career has significantly taken off since the debut of “The Boys” in 2019. Amazon seems to be a fitting platform for Quaid, given his impressive performances not only in the gritty superhero series but also in his performance as the overly enthusiastic safehouse-keeper Marty Comer in “Heads of State.

In simpler terms, Quaid hasn’t been given the most substantial role yet, but much like his minor roles in “Oppenheimer” and “Rampage”, he steals the show just as effectively as he did in larger roles such as those in “Scream”, “Companion”, and “Neighborhood Watch”. There’s also “Novocaine”, his debut leading role film, which is both charmingly ultra-violent and frequently hilarious. Similar to “Companion”, it’s one of the best movies of 2025.

2) Nobody

Here are three compelling reasons to consider watching or revisiting the film “Nobody”. First, it bears a strong resemblance to the “John Wick” series, which could make for a fantastic pairing if you’re planning a double feature with the upcoming official “John Wick” spin-off, “Ballerina”. Second, the sequel, “Nobody 2”, is set to premiere in theaters on August 15.

Regarding point three, it’s important to note that the connection lies in the fact that these movies are helmed by Ilya Naishuller, a director known for crafting action films that challenge traditional conventions.

3) The Suicide Squad

In essence, James Gunn’s DC Universe, starting officially with the release of Superman, can be seen as having truly commenced with The Suicide Squad in 2021. From any perspective, he has launched this fresh cinematic world on a positive note.

In “The Suicide Squad,” Dwayne Johnson Cena and Idris Elba made their first on-screen pairing. Just like in “Heads of State,” their chemistry was a standout aspect of this film. Here’s to hoping that despite the unfortunate financial struggles of “The Suicide Squad,” we get to see Peacemaker and Bloodsport together again on the screen in the future.

4) Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Initially, Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs in “Fast Five” served as a counterpart to Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto. Similarly, Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw was introduced as the main antagonist towards the end of “Fast & Furious 6.” However, due to their immense popularity among fans, these characters eventually evolved beyond their adversarial roles and have become just as developed as any member of Dom’s crew, if not more so.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me tell you that what truly resonates with audiences isn’t just their individual traits, but the electrifying chemistry between these characters – much like how Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham complement each other on screen. It seems almost destined that they would team up, and that’s exactly what we got in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Now, while it may veer slightly away from the franchise’s traditional tone, and introduce a supervillain as the main antagonist, played by Idris Elba from Heads of State, it still ranks among the top entries in the Fast series.

5) White House Down

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself in a peculiar situation when I watched both “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon,” as well as “White House Down” and “Olympus Has Fallen.” These films share remarkably similar storylines, with not much time separating their releases. However, it’s undeniable that “Olympus Has Fallen” outshines “White House Down” in terms of quality. If you’re a fan of action-packed political thrillers, I’d recommend giving “Olympus Has Fallen” a watch.

In terms of tone, “White House Down” is more similar to “Heads of State” than “Olympus Has Fallen.” While “Olympus” is dark and devoid of humor, focusing on intense violence, “White House Down” combines action with a touch of humor. Neither film can be considered high art, but both provide an enjoyable viewing experience. In essence, “White House Down” offers a lighter form of entertainment compared to the seriousness of “Heads of State.

6) G20

Watching G20 is highly recommended immediately after Heads of State ends, for several compelling reasons. Firstly, like Heads of State, it’s a production by Amazon Prime Video. Secondly, much like its predecessor, it features an action-packed storyline where the main character is the President of the United States.

Viola Davis demonstrates her versatility by excelling as President Sutton, showcasing that she can handle any role with finesse. Known for her exceptional talent among her contemporaries, it’s evident that she can deliver action just as impressively as drama.

7) The Rundown

Initially, Dwayne Johnson transitioned from a WWE superstar to acting with the film “The Mummy Returns“, although his role mainly consisted of non-spoken parts and relied heavily on poor CGI. Later, he headlined “The Scorpion King“, but it was “The Rundown” that truly marked his ascension as a film star.

Although the film didn’t make a big impact at theaters, it received great critical acclaim and remains enjoyable even 20 years on. This brings us to Heads of State. Just like John Cena was once a popular WWE figure, Heads of State demonstrates that he possesses the same level, if not more, charisma and stardom as Dwayne Johnson did.
