As a crypto investor, I’ve learned that Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has announced plans to phase out its fact-checking feature exclusively in the United States, as per a recent letter dated January 13th, addressed to the Brazilian government.
In simpler terms, Meta has explained that currently, they are ending their self-run Fact-Checking Program specifically within the U.S., with plans to improve and fine-tune the community notes feature before rolling it out globally, including Brazil. This information was communicated in a letter addressed to the Attorney General of the Union (AGU) of Brazil, written in Portuguese.
Meta received a letter after a 72-hour ultimatum, which was set by Brazil’s AGU, asking Meta to specify who exactly the suspension of the third-party fact-checking tool would impact.
Following Meta’s announcement on January 7th, they decided to eliminate the feature in order to promote “greater freedom of speech” across their platforms – this action being part of a wider initiative to adhere to their corporate human rights guidelines.
Meta is changing its fact-checking system in the U.S. to a community notes feature, much like what Elon Musk’s X has. This adjustment aims to find a more harmonious balance between freedom of expression and safety, as Mark Zuckerberg’s company detailed to Brazil’s AGU.
The platform recognizes that extreme instances of free speech could potentially lead to harm, such as abuse. It’s already equipped with automated systems to detect and manage severe breaches on its platforms, which include offenses ranging from terrorism, child sexual exploitation, fraud, scams, and drug-related matters.
On January 10th, Brazil’s Attorney-General, Jorge Messias, stated that Brazil is unhappy about Meta’s decision to eliminate its fact-checking feature.
In Brazil, we have strict laws to safeguard children, at-risk groups, and our business community. We firmly oppose such networks from turning our digital space into chaos or brutality.
According to Zuckerberg, he plans to collaborate with the incoming Trump administration to counteract foreign governments attempting to suppress U.S. businesses through censorship.
Zuckerberg is expected to attend Republican Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
