Stranger Things Makes Netflix History With Series Finale Ratings (And Joins an Exclusive Club)

As a huge fan, I was so excited to finally see the last season of Stranger Things, and wow, it really delivered! There’s a lot of discussion about how everything wrapped up, but one thing’s for sure: this show has been massive for Netflix and pop culture in general. The finale was a huge event – it packed theaters, actually broke Netflix twice, and sparked so many conversations with fellow fans. It’s already broken tons of records, but now Stranger Things has officially made Netflix history, joining a really small group of shows that have had that kind of impact.

Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things has reached a new milestone with its fifth season. It quickly landed in the top 10 most popular shows of all time on the platform, currently at number 9 with over 105 million views. With numbers like these, it’s likely to climb even higher, potentially surpassing Bridgerton Season 3 and The Queen’s Gambit soon.

Netflix’s latest viewership data reveals another milestone: Stranger Things has now surpassed 1 billion hours watched. Season 1 of Stranger Things, along with Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Stranger Things Season 4, and Wednesday Season 1, have all reached this impressive mark. They join Squid Game Seasons 1 and 2 in an exclusive club, with Squid Game Season 1 leading the way with over 2 billion hours viewed.

What’s Next For The Stranger Things Franchise?

Given how many people are watching, Netflix definitely won’t abandon this series. Luckily, several new projects are in development, starting with Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. This animated series is set between seasons two and three, following the events of Eleven closing the gate to the Upside Down. This presented a challenge for creating danger and suspense, but the creators seem to have found a clever solution.

Another new series is being developed based on the mysterious rock seen in the final episode – the one Henry Creel found in The Abyss. This rock originally corrupted Creel, and the show will delve into its origins and the world of The Abyss. However, this new story won’t directly connect to the Mind Flayer storyline.

As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I was really interested to hear the Duffer Brothers talk about the spin-off series. They’ve said it’s going to tell its own, completely separate story with a brand new cast, so we shouldn’t expect a lot of direct connections to what happened with Eleven and the gang. While I wouldn’t be shocked if the Mind Flayer popped up somehow – maybe just a little nod – it doesn’t sound like that overarching storyline will be a major part of the new show. It seems they’re really building something fresh and unique, which is exciting!

Stranger Things season 5 is streaming on Netflix.
