It’s common knowledge that portraying Superman is a strenuous role that requires significant physical effort. The most recent actor to don the cape, David Corenswet, has shared the extent of his commitment to embody the hero. In an episode of Vanity Fair‘s popular lie detector test series, Nicholas Hoult, who portrays Lex Luthor in Superman, inquired about the risks associated with harness work and the severe injury it caused Corenswet. Initially, the polygraph technician questioned the authenticity of Corenswet’s extraordinary injury, but his vivid explanation left her convinced, leading her to confirm that his story was entirely truthful. Warning: Mild spoilers ahead.
Playing Superman is known to be a challenging job due to the physical demands it imposes. The current actor, David Corenswet, has disclosed the lengths he went to embody the hero. During an episode of Vanity Fair‘s popular lie detector test digital series, Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor in Superman, asked about the potential hazards related to harness work and the severe injury it resulted in for Corenswet. At first, the polygraph technician was skeptical of Corenswet’s extraordinary injury, but his detailed account left her convinced, leading her to conclude that his story was accurate. Spoiler alert: Mild spoilers included.
When Hoult inquired about Corenswet’s most severe injury due to spending much of the filming process secured in a harness for flying and combat scenes, the Superman actor promptly responded: “My right testicle.” Later on, Corenswet explained that the harm took place during the sequence with the Justice Gang, following their victory over the massive kaiju. It was at this point that the real meaning behind the message Superman’s parents, Jor-El (Bradley Cooper) and Lara (Angela Sarafyan), had sent along with his spaceship to Earth was disclosed.
Corenswet described a breathtaking, grand instant, ‘When I rise, shatter the glass, soar out the window, and glide through the air.’ On our initial take of that scene, it was an impressive, dramatic punch and leap – until suddenly, ‘My testicle!’
Initially, Stephanie Jackson, the polygraph technician, labeled Corenswet’s account of a personal injury as “inconclusive.” However, when Corenswet provided detailed and painful explanations about the incident, Jackson later changed her judgment to “truthful.
Indeed, I can’t deny it; it’s all caught on camera!” Corenswet chuckled. Regardless of the discomfort associated with that specific mishap, the actor maintains no ill feelings towards his Superman stunt team. They shared a laugh over the malfunctioning harness incident, and later, Hoult jokingly admitted, “I’d love to ask you more questions about your… ahem… manhood, but I’m not sure where that’s socially acceptable.
During the interview, Corenswet revealed some intriguing facts about the process of making the movie that eventually became a massive success, focusing particularly on the suit itself. He confided in Hoult that the most challenging aspect of playing Superman was donning the rather sweaty costume, as opposed to building up the 40 pounds of muscle required for the role. Corenswet further shared that he dressed up as Superman for his children’s birthday parties, and his dream is to portray a X-wing pilot in a Star Wars film where he could comfortably sit without being tossed around by wires. Lastly, his favorite Superman from his childhood was Tom Welling from Smallville.
In turn, Hoult didn’t shy away from sharing some truths. He confessed to Corenswet that he still keeps the golf clubs Hugh Grant presented him as a gift on the set of About a Boy, admitted to consuming insects for his role in Renfield, and joked about spreading mayonnaise on food items that seem appropriate. The most surprising revelation was that Hoult believed he could have played Superman better than Corenswet, having previously auditioned for the part before landing the role of Luthor. However, Hoult swiftly acknowledged Corenswet’s performance, understanding well the challenges of portraying such a character, and praised his co-star for making it appear effortless. Remarkably, both men managed to pass their lie detector tests with their friendship and dignity intact.
Superman is now playing in theaters everywhere.
