What drew you to this project?
JACOB ELORDI I received a letter from Justin, who had long been my acting inspiration since I was around 14 years old. Without even opening the letter, I knew I’d accept the offer because it aligned with my aspirations. As an actor, I strive for significance rather than just showing up and going through the motions. When a role like Richard’s comes along, it’s like finding the perfect script as a performer – there’s nothing more you could ask for.
In terms of myself, I’m a close friend of Richard’s. It so happened that I was in London when he received the Man Booker Prize, and we went out to celebrate. Later on, at his cabin on Bruny Island in Tasmania, he proposed the idea of directing it in a longer format. From there, we began our journey, and it’s been approximately six years of effort to get this project off the ground. This type of drama is incredibly ambitious; such productions are not commonplace these days.
How tough was it shooting the jungle sequences?
Justin made it clear that what we were about to do would be challenging, but he reassured us that it would be something we’d never forget. And indeed, it turned out to be both demanding and profoundly moving.
What makes this story so resonant now?
JK I find it striking how our current environment resembles images from World War Two. Reflecting on those historical events serves as an important reminder for us today, offering valuable insights and a broader perspective that we should keep in mind.
Regardless of the hardships and sorrows, humans have consistently created art, a natural expression of ourselves. This is our way of comprehending, healing, and preserving memories. It’s crucial that we retain these recollections.
After spending time working in both America and the UK, have you found yourself yearning to share an Australian tale, Jacob?
Absolutely, I wholeheartedly agree. In essence, we all yearn to share our unique narratives. Australian cinema, in my opinion, is an exceptionally vibrant medium that deserves more recognition than it currently receives. It’s a subject that ignites my enthusiasm.
What is it that still excites you about acting?
In my perspective, it’s as if I’ve stepped back into the simplicity and joy of childhood days – reminiscent of a visit to the park with my mother, the gentle affection of petting a dog, the refreshing taste of an ice-cold beverage on a hot day, or perhaps even tasting the richness of life in one fleeting moment. I find myself yearning for that sensation, that connection, that sense of presence – it’s an elusive but cherished emotion that I strive to rediscover.
Justin, you’ve collaborated with some truly talented performers like Michael Fassbender and Jude Law in the past. Could you share your thoughts on how Jacob stacks up against them?
JK Jacob’s talent is exceptional, and his future acting roles are expected to be equally impressive. His discerning taste is admirable, and he works with some highly respected directors in the industry.

Talking of which, Jacob, how do you reflect on the wild success of Saltburn?
I It was fantastic, and I’m thrilled that it resonated with others. Emerald Fennell is truly brilliant, and it’s wonderful to witness her talent in such a prominent platform.
After connecting with the director once more, who is working on the Wuthering Heights remake featuring Margot Robbie, what exciting developments might we anticipate in this collaboration?
This movie is a grand, heartwarming love story – a kind that isn’t common these days. I’m genuinely pleased with how it turned out.
How do you feel about playing a heart-throb?
It’s essential that love is present within each individual human. Consequently, it will consistently be a recurring motif in films when creating stories centered around people.
