What’s the view from your sofa?
In my cozy abode, I find myself in an unusual predicament – my compact television and ample bookshelves create a constant internal struggle whenever I’m indulging in screen time. The guilt of not reading, while engrossed in a movie or show, is ever-present. Upon deeper contemplation, I realize the placement of my ‘highbrow books’ right behind the TV was perhaps an ill-considered decision. If it were the Beano annuals that occupied that spot instead, I’d undoubtedly feel less remorseful about my entertainment choices.
What have you enjoyed watching recently?
I thoroughly enjoyed LOL: Last One Laughing UK on Amazon Prime. The show’s unique twist, which explores societal taboos around what we can and cannot find amusing, added an intriguing layer. However, it was simply watching comedians engage in ridiculous antics while others struggled to maintain composure that made this one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever witnessed.
Who controls the remote at home?
It appears there are many remotes here. I recognize two – one is for the TV and another for the device where you select iPlayer or similar services. The remaining three seem to have an unknown origin or purpose. It’s unclear who manages these remotes, but it definitely isn’t me.
With a young daughter and a baby, what’s your approach to screen time?
My daughter, who is ten years old, enjoys watching The Masked Singer and classic episodes of Poirot, similar to her mother. Our youngest, on the other hand, doesn’t watch any screen content; she’s only 18 months old. Instead, she adores Bluey – a fantastic television program – but she thinks it’s just a collection of fun plastic dog toys called Weebles.
This version aims to maintain the meaning and tone of the original text while making it more natural and easy to read for an audience.
What did you watch growing up?
In your role as a TV columnist, how do you maintain impartiality while critiquing a production when your spouse is one of its cast members?
To put it simply, I’m more of a puzzle enthusiast than a TV critic. When Ludwig [the BBC series starring her husband, David Mitchell] premiered, I penned an article about puzzles, but I acknowledged that it was a fantastic show. I usually avoid reviewing poor shows as I don’t find pleasure in criticizing those who aim to entertain. However, I did express my dislike for Squid Game and made it known. Yet, they seem to be thriving despite my critique.

Your dad, Alan, was a humourist. What did you learn from him?
It’s always better for me to come up with something humorous, rather than being serious unless there’s no other option left. Humor is my preferred choice; gravity is a backup plan in dire situations.
What’s the most memorable feedback you’ve had from an Only Connect fan?
As a devoted fan, I’ve always kept a special place in my memory for an intriguing letter I received a few years back. Over the years, I’ve encountered a wide array of comments – whether they were about translations, parliamentary procedures, or other topics. One particular query that has lingered in my mind was from someone who asked, “Why is it considered acceptable for Victoria Coren Mitchell to comment on a man’s physique?” Frankly, I can’t recall if she ever did, but the question certainly sparked an interesting conversation!
Do you enjoy other TV quizzes?
I adore the game show Countdown to such an extent that I find it hard to resist watching it. It captivates me so thoroughly that I end up creating anagrams from license plates.
Do you prefer being a host or a guest on a panel show?
Participating in Have I Got News for You is one of my delightful activities. The team, including Ian Hislop, Paul Merton, and their exceptional producer, are all outstanding. Even the graphic designers in the backroom seem to read minds. Being a guest on this show is a privilege, but it’s also nerve-wracking because you never know what unexpected challenges will arise, making me worry that I won’t be able to identify a cabinet member and end up looking foolish.
Which presenter do you admire?
My close companion, Claudia Winkleman, exudes warmth and humor, possesses unique quirks yet remains approachable, showcases exceptional intellect without being overbearing. I can’t imagine encountering a more captivating television host during my existence.
