A Version of Bride of Frankenstein Will Hit Theaters in 2026

Fans who enjoyed Guillermo del Toro’s take on Frankenstein will be pleased to hear a new film, The Bride!, is coming to theaters this spring. Though not a sequel to del Toro’s movie, it’s a compelling project on its own. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley, The Bride! isn’t a direct remake of the classic Bride of Frankenstein, but draws inspiration from it. The story explores Frankenstein’s longing for a partner and the chaos that follows when he creates one. A trailer released late last year gave audiences a glimpse of the film’s distinctive style and atmosphere.

Even if his film The Bride! is successful, people would still be excited to see Guillermo del Toro tackle a more traditional version of the story. He clearly loves this source material, and his adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel is both respectful and an improvement on the original. A Bride of Frankenstein film directed by del Toro would likely be fantastic. He consistently creates compelling and emotionally resonant stories about monsters, making them relatable and sympathetic. Given the tragic elements of the Bride of Frankenstein narrative, it would be captivating to see his unique vision for it.

It’s uncertain if a Bride of Frankenstein film will ever happen. Guillermo del Toro seems to have decided against it, pointing out that Victor Frankenstein dies in his film Frankenstein. Since Victor is essential to creating the Creature’s mate, bringing him back would be necessary. While Hollywood often finds ways to revive characters, del Toro intends for his Frankenstein to stand alone as a complete story. He didn’t initially plan a series of monster movies; he simply wanted to adapt a story he’d always loved. With Frankenstein finished, del Toro is now free to focus on his other projects.

Many fans might be sad to see Guillermo del Toro move on from the Frankenstein story. He had a clear vision for a Bride of Frankenstein adaptation that would have been visually striking and truly memorable. However, The Bride! promises to be impactful in its own way, offering a fresh, punk-inspired take on the classic tale. While visually and in terms of mood, The Bride! could be very different from del Toro’s Frankenstein, the two films might ultimately complement each other well.
