HBO Max Just Added an Acolyte Star’s Horror Comedy (And It’s a Perfect Replacement for Knives Out)

As a huge mystery fan, I’ve always loved a good whodunit, and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out films really brought the genre back to life. They take those classic Agatha Christie vibes – a puzzling murder, a colorful cast of suspects – and mix them with smart, funny observations about today’s world. The films are just a blast! Since everyone’s buzzing about Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, I wanted to share something similar I recently discovered. If you enjoy that kind of hilariously twisted fun, you need to check out a horror comedy starring an actor from The Acolyte that just became available on HBO Max. It’s gotten fantastic reviews – it’s ‘Certified Fresh’ – and I think anyone who loves a good mystery will get a kick out of it.

You can now watch the popular A24 film Bodies Bodies Bodies on HBO Max, as it became available on January 1st. Starring Amandla Stenberg (known for her roles in Acolyte), the movie follows a group of friends in their twenties who throw a party at a secluded mansion during a hurricane. The fun quickly turns dangerous when a party game leads to a death, and the group is left trying to uncover the killer amongst them – leading to betrayal, hidden secrets, and plenty of drama.

Bodies Bodies Bodies Is a Must-Watch for Knives Out Fans

If you enjoyed the Knives Out films, Bodies Bodies Bodies is a great choice for your next movie night. Though they differ in style—Knives Out is a classic whodunit, while Bodies Bodies Bodies is a more modern, satirical take geared towards Gen Z—both movies cleverly combine the familiar elements of murder mysteries with sharp social commentary and dark humor. Knives Out pokes fun at class and family issues, and Bodies Bodies Bodies satirizes Gen Z’s online culture and attempts at social justice, creating a genuinely unsettling and paranoid atmosphere that will leave you questioning everything you see.

While Knives Out has received a lot of attention as a standout mystery, Bodies Bodies Bodies is a surprisingly excellent, though successful, film that deserves more recognition. It’s not just a good substitute for Knives Out; it’s a fantastic whodunit and horror comedy on its own. Critics loved it, giving it an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “Certified Fresh” badge. New York Times critic Lena Wilson cleverly described it as “Euphoria with knives,” and it truly feels like a modern take on classics like Scream or Clue, updated for today’s world. The movie skillfully combines the drama of teenage life – including messy relationships and social media – with thrilling suspense, making for a genuinely fun and twisty experience.
