Dove Cameron’s MCU Debut Was Brief, But Meaningful

Dove Cameron, known for her Disney roles in Liv and Maddie and the Descendants movies, actually appeared in a Marvel TV series nearly eight years ago, and her character’s story was quite dramatic. The Descendants franchise recently released a fourth film, The Rise of Red, but Cameron chose not to participate following the death of a fellow cast member.

Dove Cameron, who’s 29 and originally from Washington, is a frequent fan pick for Disney roles, including those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What many fans might not realize is that she actually appeared in six episodes of the Marvel series Agents of SHIELD back in 2018, between filming Descendants 2 and Descendants 3.

Ruby was created through genetic engineering to be the daughter of General R. Hale, a powerful officer in the U.S. Air Force. She was also intended to become the future leader of Hydra, a dangerous organization within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, carrying on its legacy as one of its final leaders.

Sharon Carter, a character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who hasn’t been seen in a while, thought she was meant to be transformed by Project Destroyer of Worlds. This project would give her incredible powers using a substance called Gravitonium, and she believed it would finally earn her mother’s acceptance.

However, the situation was more complicated. General Hale had his own plans and believed Chloe Bennett’s character, Quake, would be perfect for the Super Soldier program – a program she definitely didn’t want to be a part of.

Ruby quickly grew to intensely dislike Quake, feeling that defeating her was the only thing standing between her and recognition as a capable hero. She later received an infusion of Gravitonium with assistance from Werner, Baron von Strucker’s son, which unfortunately caused some problems.

Cameron’s villain did get what she wanted – the power to control gravity. However, she couldn’t fully master it, and the ability caused her immense pain. She was also haunted by the memories and suffering of those who had been affected by Gravitonium before her.

Ruby made a huge impact right away by brutally severing both of Yo-Yo Rodriguez’s arms – Rodriguez being a super-powered agent of SHIELD. However, this act ultimately led to Ruby’s defeat. Rodriguez, who can quickly return to her original location after using her powers, was able to retaliate by fatally slashing Ruby’s throat.

Dove Cameron’s character, Ruby Hale, was a standout in Season 5 of Agents of SHIELD. She was a compelling and determined character, motivated by a sad past, and had a small but interesting connection to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Her death had a permanent impact on Yo-Yo Rodriguez, who needed cybernetic arms for the rest of her life.

But That Isn’t Dove Cameron’s Only Marvel Role, And It May Not Be Her Last

While Ruby Hale might be Dove Cameron’s most well-known live-action superhero role, she also voiced the popular character Gwen Stacy in the animated series Marvel Rising around the time she appeared on Agents of SHIELD.

The series focused on the Secret Warriors, a group of young, diverse female superheroes working together as a team. Interestingly, it brought Cameron back together with Chloe Bennett and Ming-Na Wen, as they had previously co-starred on ABC.

Similar to the popular Spider-Verse films from Sony Pictures, this version of Gwen Stacy wasn’t just a supporting character; she got to be the hero as Ghost-Spider.

Fans widely believe Cameron’s potential appearance as a character named Rising could signal her return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s a popular choice among viewers to play Gwen Stacy alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, succeeding Emma Stone who previously played the role in The Amazing Spider-Man films.

Marvel Studios sometimes brings actors from their show Agents of SHIELD back for different parts, likely because it wasn’t always clear if the show officially fit into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe story. Given the name Cameron is fairly common and has a history with Disney, it’s quite possible we’ll see this actor appear in future MCU projects.

With Marvel Studios planning to introduce a new, younger team of X-Men, 29-year-old actor Cameron is being considered as a potential cast member. This could happen after the film Avengers: Secret Wars effectively restarts the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a fresh slate of characters.

Emma Frost, a telepath with diamond-like powers, has often been suggested for a role, but Cameron could also play Dazzler, a hero who fights with music. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is a known fan of Dazzler, and Taylor Swift was once considered for the part.
