After twenty years, Makoto Yukimura’s popular manga series, Vinland Saga, finished in July 2025. The story takes place in 11th-century Europe and centers on Thorfinn, the son of a famous Viking. He was raised on tales of Vinland, a legendary land of warmth and abundance where people didn’t have to battle. This peaceful place stands in stark contrast to Thorfinn’s harsh, war-torn upbringing. Despite its compelling narrative and dedicated fanbase, the anime adaptation has faced some production challenges. The first season was created by WIT Studio and released in July 2019, and MAPPA then took over for the second season, which premiered in January 2023.
Following the first season of Vinland Saga, WIT Studio moved on to other projects like Ranking of Kings and a Netflix collaboration, Vampire in the Garden. This isn’t unusual for them – in 2020, they passed Attack on Titan to MAPPA because they couldn’t adapt the story quickly enough. It’s been three years since then, and fans have been hoping for a sequel. Unfortunately, a recent update from the creator, Yukimura, isn’t what fans wanted to hear.
Vinland Saga Creator Confirms Season 3 Isn’t Under Production Right Now

Yukimura, the creator of Vinland Saga, recently addressed a rumor about a third season of the anime on his social media. He thanked fans for their continued support and said he’d just heard about the possibility of season 3 being made, but hadn’t received official confirmation. He expressed hope that it is in production, while jokingly noting how challenging it would be to animate some of the more complex elements, like Hild’s crossbow.
He added another comment, explaining that the rumors about a third season likely started because many fans, including himself, are hoping for one. He offered to help with production in any way he could, even with small tasks like picking up lunch.
We’ve seen some reports that Season 3 of Vinland Saga is in production, but MAPPA, the studio behind the show, hasn’t officially confirmed this. They’re currently working on several other projects, including Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Season 2 of Chainsaw Man, and Season 2 of Dorohedoro. While they haven’t renewed Vinland Saga yet, given how popular the series is, a third season will likely happen – it’s just going to take a bit longer than fans might hope.
I’m so excited for the future of this series! The best news is that Yukimura-sensei himself is involved in the production now, which really puts my mind at ease. For those wondering about the story, the manga is divided into four major arcs. The first two – the War Arc and the Slave Arc – were already covered in Seasons 1 and 2. Season 2 wrapped up right as they started the Easter Expedition Arc, so that’s definitely what we’ll be seeing in Season 3, and I can’t wait!
