Star Trek’s New TV Show Continues a Major Rotten Tomatoes Trend (Only 1 Series Ever Failed at It)

For many years, Paramount has produced numerous TV shows and films expanding the world of Star Trek and the Starship Enterprise. Even after merging with Skydance, the studio continues to develop new Star Trek projects. A new series, planned for release in 2026, will explore a different part of Starfleet, but it’s already facing some criticism. Despite this, the upcoming show is following a recent pattern for Star Trek: generating buzz on Rotten Tomatoes, both positive and negative.

The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, currently has an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and most critics gave it positive reviews even before the first episode aired. Historically, almost every Star Trek show has been well-received on the site. Series like the original Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine all earned high praise. However, success wasn’t always a given. Star Trek: Enterprise, from 2001 starring Scott Bakula, is the only series in the franchise to receive a “Rotten” score, earning just 56%.

What Did We Think of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?

We gave the new Star Trek series on Paramount+ a positive review, similar to a “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We scored it a 3.5 out of 5, and in our review, we pointed out some interesting parallels between Starfleet Academy and the Harry Potter series. While it might not appeal to all viewers, both new fans and longtime Star Trek enthusiasts will find things to like and dislike. You can find our full review, published earlier this week, for a more detailed look.

As a longtime Star Trek fan, especially of the Kurtzman shows, I really enjoyed this! But even if you’re a bit more traditional, I think it’s worth sticking with – it doesn’t feel like it breaks from what Gene Roddenberry originally envisioned. What I found particularly appealing was getting a glimpse of Starfleet officers before they became the seasoned crew we know and love. That concept alone makes Starfleet Academy feel like a story worth following.

Although the new series Starfleet Academy is sparking debate, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of a more familiar show. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be back in 2026 for its fourth and final season, once again inviting viewers aboard the ship with Captain Pike and his crew. We don’t have a confirmed release date yet, but many Star Trek enthusiasts are already excited for one last adventure to explore strange new worlds.
