Margaret Cho will never forget this messy performance.
The comedian recently revealed that early in her career, a weight loss drug she was taking caused her to have an embarrassing accident while performing on stage.
On the January 7th episode of the How to Fail podcast, Margaret, 57, explained that she began experimenting with various drugs. She also described consuming foods designed to rapidly move through the digestive system, such as Olean – chemically produced fats used for frying, and artificial sweeteners – which caused constant diarrhea.
Olean, a brand of chips and snacks made with a fat substitute called Olestra, became well-known for causing digestive problems and was eventually taken off shelves in the mid-2000s. Margaret explained that she began eating only these snacks while also taking medication to block fat absorption. This combination unexpectedly became a problem when she wore a white outfit during a stand-up performance.
She described a terrifying moment near the end of her performance when she unexpectedly began experiencing a bowel movement she couldn’t control. She explained it wasn’t solid waste, but a large amount of oily substance – she compared the appearance to grease from pepperoni pizza – that began leaking from her rectum while she was still on stage.
The former Drop Dead Diva star explained that she received a standing ovation and an encore request, but she had to quickly exit the stage by hiding behind the curtains.
Let me tell you, that incident with Margaret didn’t end when it seemed! She actually continued to struggle with some digestive issues right there backstage. She really needed to feel completely comfortable before she could finally leave, poor thing.
She explained that she initially reacted by crying and feeling disgusted. She was worried about getting orange stains on her car seat, but also found the situation strangely funny. After that experience, she stopped taking those drugs, though she continued to explore other ways to lose weight.

Margaret shared that she’d dealt with insecurities about her body since she was a child, something she briefly addressed in her first TV show, All-American Girl. While she’s still proud of creating the series, which aired from 1994 to 1995, she explained that critics paid more attention to her weight than to the stories she was trying to tell.
She said she’d always been overweight and had come to terms with it. As a comedian, she assumed her weight wouldn’t be an issue, believing you could be any size and still be funny. However, she was surprised to find that it actually did matter, and she felt pressured to lose a significant amount of weight.
Margaret struggled with diet pills for years, and eventually, her focus on weight loss began to interfere with her work. She sought therapy, which, along with a 12-step program, proved very helpful in her recovery.

She shared this in June 2024, adding that seeing it work for others while it didn’t help her left her feeling down and wondering what was wrong with her.
