Why Squid Game Fans Are Devastated Over Thanos’ Final Fate

As much as I’d love to see him return, it seems unlikely that Thanos the rapper will be making a comeback in Squid Game any time soon. The second season of Squid Game, which debuted last year, has gained even more popularity than its predecessor, largely due to the array of new, compelling characters introduced this time around. Unlike the first season, these new characters had more complex personalities and some were even willing participants in the deadly games, knowing the potential for life-changing rewards.

However, certain characters from the new season of “Squid Game” seemed to relish the circumstances a bit excessively. The introduction of Thanos, a rapper character, was one such example. Interestingly, this character chose his name after the Marvel villain known for collecting Infinity Stones. Portrayed by Choi Seung-hyun in the series, unfortunately, Thanos didn’t survive till the end of the season. Despite fans’ hopes that he might cheat death and return for more games in the final season, it appears that his fate is irreversible.

Squid Game’s Deaths are Largely Permanent

A popular theory among fans is that Thanos might have found a way to survive his apparent demise in Season 2 of Squid Game, possibly returning for Season 3 in some unexpected manner. The concept of a character like Thanos continuing to participate in these lethal games despite a seemingly fatal injury makes for an intriguing plot twist, but it could potentially undermine the authenticity of the series. In , once a death is depicted, it’s final; there are exceptions, as certain characters have come back after supposed deaths, but these instances are rare and typically not reversed for the entirety of the characters’ arcs.

In a realistic context, introducing Thanos again in Squid Game, despite his popularity among fans, could undermine all the effort put into creating this believable world thus far. Even when first introduced, Thanos was somewhat eccentric and stood out, which might have already pushed the boundaries of immersion for viewers seeking a deep dive into this grim universe. The death scene with the fork to the neck serves as a stark reminder of the show’s grittiness.

Squid Game Season 3’s Story Is Already Set

Before the premiere of Squid Game Season 2, its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has shared that he planned the story to conclude over two final seasons while penning these concluding episodes. This indicates that the narrative is already structured for the last episodes, implying it’s unlikely to deviate even with fan requests for a character like Thanos to reappear. Thanos has fulfilled his role in the story and was killed before the climax, suggesting a more intense conclusion may be awaiting Seung Gi-Hun and the others instead.

In a recent interview, actor Choi Seung-hyun (who played Thanos) expressed that he believed Thanos’ purpose had been fulfilled and that his death was appropriate. He further stated that Thanos deserved to die, suggesting that his demise was overdue. The unexpected nature of Thanos’ death, occurring outside the usual storyline, added to the shock value. Given this permanent ending for a character who initially appeared to have a larger role, it seems unlikely that Thanos will return in the final season, contributing to the overall tragic atmosphere of the situation.

Squid Game Season 3 releases with Netflix on June 27th, so we’ll see for ourselves soon enough.
