A sequel to the highly-regarded action thriller Sicario quietly appeared on streaming services this January and is quickly becoming popular. While Taylor Sheridan is famous for creating the Yellowstone universe of shows – including Yellowstone, Landman, and 1923, with more on the way – he’s also a talented screenwriter for film. He previously wrote Hell or High Water and Wind River (and directed the latter), as well as Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario. Now, Sicario: Day of the Soldado – the 2018 sequel that sparked some debate – is once again available to stream.
The action thriller Sicario: Day of the Soldado is now available to stream and is proving to be a hit with viewers. It’s currently the seventh most popular movie on the platform worldwide. Though Taylor Sheridan wrote the sequel, Denis Villeneuve didn’t return to direct; that role was taken by Stefano Sollima. Josh Brolin reprises his character, alongside returning cast members Benicio Del Toro and Jeffrey Donovan. Joining them are Isabela Merced (from The Last of Us), Catherine Keener, and Matthew Modine.
The first movie followed Kate as she navigated the dangerous world of the US-Mexico drug war. Now, the sequel focuses on Matt Graver, who teams up once again with the enigmatic mercenary Alejandro. This time, their mission is to capture the daughter of a powerful cartel leader after terrorists start crossing the border with the help of Mexican cartels. Here’s what the movie is about:

Considering Denis Villeneuve is a highly acclaimed director, the sequel to his popular film Sicario had high expectations. Sicario: Day of the Soldado is generally a solid crime thriller, earning a 62% score on Rotten Tomatoes (and 66% from audiences). However, it didn’t reach the same critical success as the first Sicario film, which received a 91% rating (with an 85% audience score).

While some viewers loved the sequel – one Twitter user called it a masterpiece, praising its beauty from beginning to end – most agree that Sicario: Day of the Soldado isn’t as good as the first Sicario. The script didn’t feel as sharp, and the sequel lacked the subtle depth and gripping visual style that made the original so powerful and suspenseful.
