Longlegs Ending Explained: Satanic Secrets of Nicolas Cage’s Twisted Thriller Unveiled

The thrilling horror movie “Longlegs” is now available for streaming on both Hulu and Disney+, opening up a larger audience to this year’s most buzzed-about horror flick. There were several factors that contributed to the viral popularity of “Longlegs”, one being its marketing strategy, which hyped it as another terrifying contender for the title of “scariest movie ever”; another reason was its shocking plot twist, a decisive moment that had many viewers on the edge of their seats. After watching “Longlegs” for the first time, most people will likely be left with questions about the film’s hidden meanings and interpretations. That’s where we can help.

Here’s everything you need to know about Longlegs‘ story and the ending.

Longlegs is Really A Supernatural Occult Story

To understand Longlegs, it’s essential to delve into the structure of its plot. Initially, the movie trailers marketed it as a thriller with a chilling Noir atmosphere, similar to The Silence of the Lambs, featuring protagonist Maika Monroe as an FBI agent and antagonist Nic Cage as a sinister serial killer. However, director Osgood Perkins (The Monkey) skillfully combines various horror sub-genres to deliver a surprise ending. While the serial killer mystery serves as the outer layer, it actually masks a tale steeped in supernatural occult lore.

The main plot of Longlegs revolves around how Maika Monroe’s character, Agent Lee Harker, narrowly escaped becoming one of Dale Kobble’s (a.k.a Longlegs) initial victims on her ninth birthday. Instead, her mother Ruth (played by Alicia Witt) struck a chilling bargain with the devil to save Lee’s life. In this deal, Ruth – a former nurse – agreed to serve Satan, becoming his instrument.

Longlegs would create exquisite dolls as presents, which Ruth, disguised as a nun, would deliver to young girls on their ninth birthdays. These seemingly innocent dolls were actually carriers of black metal orbs filled with satanic influence. Once inside the homes, the dolls would subtly manipulate the families, causing the fathers to commit murder against their wives and children within six days of the birthday. The ensuing chaos left everyone, including family members, friends, and law enforcement, utterly puzzled.

Longlegs Ending Explained

In the climactic scene of the novel “Longlegs“, Lee uncovers the truth that her Mother was Longlegs’ remaining partner in crime, as the murderer met his end by smashing his head against the table in a police interrogation room. When Ruth pulls the trigger on the doll created by Longlegs for Lee, it causes Lee to faint but also frees her from Satan’s influence, which had been suppressing her memories while simultaneously bestowing minor psychic powers upon her. As Lee lies unconscious, she is able to remember her past encounter with Longlegs and comes to understand that the killer has resided in her mother’s basement since then. She also becomes aware that Ruth and Longlegs are bound by a debt to Satan, requiring them to sacrifice one final victim to complete the ritual murders within places forming a satanic triangle.

As Lee was soundly asleep, it transpired that Ruth had stealthily reached the last victim: Ruby Kelders, the nine-year-old child of Agent Carter (Blair Underwood), who happened to be Lee’s superior at the FBI. When Lee arrived at Ruby’s birthday party, he found himself arriving just in time to witness the malevolent force beginning to take hold. Ruth revealed her position as a servant of Satan and justified her actions, claiming they were necessary for Lee’s protection.

Unfortunately, Agent Carter fell under the dark influence and brutally killed his wife Anna (Carmel Amit) in the kitchen. In a desperate bid to protect Ruby, Lee shot Carter dead before he could harm the young girl any further. To shield Ruby from additional danger, Lee also fatally wounded Carter’s wife by shooting her in the head.

In a strange twist, when Lee attempts to shoot Ruby’s doll and break Satan’s hold over her, he discovers that his gun inexplicably won’t fire. The film concludes with Lee urging Ruby to flee with him, aiming to escape Satan’s lingering influence. This ending doesn’t suggest optimism; instead, it reflects the movie’s recurring themes of lives dictated by forces beyond our grasp and the profound effects such control can have on our identities. As a result, while they’ve managed to survive the immediate peril, neither Lee nor Ruby are truly out of harm’s way yet.

Currently, Longlegs can be streamed on both Hulu and Disney+. Meanwhile, Osgood Perkins’ newest movie titled The Monkey has made its way to cinemas.
