Elizabeth Olsen has become a well-known actress thanks to her impressive work in both independent and popular movies and TV shows. Now, one of her earlier, lesser-known horror films is available on Netflix, almost fifteen years after it first came out.
Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, and Eric Sheffer Stevens, Silent House is a reimagining of a Uruguayan horror movie. The story follows Sarah (Olsen) as she helps her father (Trese) and uncle (Stevens) renovate their old family home so they can sell it. The house has been empty for a long time and doesn’t have electricity, so they’re using lanterns for light. One night, Sarah gets separated from her family and finds herself trapped, unable to reach anyone for help. As she becomes increasingly frightened, she starts to experience hallucinations, making it hard to tell what’s real and what isn’t.
It’s Flawed, But Richly Atmospheric
While Silent House didn’t receive positive reviews from critics or audiences, Elizabeth Olsen’s performance was widely praised. Shaun Monro of What Culture noted Olsen’s dedication to her role but found the film, like the original Uruguayan version, ultimately repetitive. Similarly, Daniel Green of Cinevue gave the film a 2 out of 5 star rating, stating that even Olsen’s strong performance couldn’t save it from being a disappointing and ineffective thriller.
A Reddit user agreed with the criticism, saying neither the original film nor the remake were particularly enjoyable for them. However, they felt the original was much better. They described the American remake as overly simplified, losing the suspense of the original by explaining everything to the audience instead of letting them figure things out. While praising Elizabeth Olsen’s performance, they ultimately found the remake lacked the mystery that made the original compelling.
Overall, the movie creates a suspenseful mood and features a strong performance, making it potentially worth seeing.
