What Paul Mescal Told Hamnet’s Chloé Zhao Before Golden Globes 2026

All the world’s a stage—and Hamnet has taken yet another.

On January 11th, at the 2026 Golden Globes, the Shakespeare-based movie won Best Picture Drama. It beat out other nominees including Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, and Sinners. You can find a complete list of winners here.

Chloé Zhao was momentarily stunned when Hamnet was mentioned during the ceremony, which Nikki Glaser hosted. She quickly recovered and shared a heartwarming story about Paul Mescal while accepting the award onstage at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

She recalled a conversation with Paul that morning. He had told her that writing Hamnet taught him a valuable lesson about being an artist: the importance of vulnerability. He explained that it’s about allowing yourself to be truly seen, flaws and all, and offering your whole self to the world, even the parts you’re embarrassed or afraid of.

The film Hamnet didn’t just win Best Picture Drama – Jessie Buckley also received the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. She played Agnes Hathaway, the wife of William Shakespeare, in this emotional family story.

Chloé’s approach likely impressed producer Steven Spielberg, who publicly acknowledged her talent during a speech.

Spielberg shared his admiration for the book and explained why he believed only one director could truly bring it to life: the incredibly talented Chloé Zhao. He felt her vision was uniquely suited to tell the story of Agnes, Will, and the connection between them and the natural world.

I was absolutely thrilled to see Hamnet recognized, not just as Best Picture Drama, but also for Jessie Buckley’s incredible performance! She completely deserved the Best Female Actor award for her portrayal of Agnes Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife. It was such a moving and powerful performance in a truly beautiful family drama.
