Hiro Mashima is a highly celebrated manga artist who has been creating comics since 1998, including both ongoing series and short stories. He gained international fame with his action-packed fantasy manga, Fairy Tail. This popular series ran in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2006 to 2017 and won a Kodansha Manga Award in 2009. Although the original story concluded with the wizards bringing peace to Fiore, the adventure continued in a sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, which began in 2018.
A sequel manga to the original series, created by Mashima and illustrated by Atsuo Ueda, is currently being published on Kodansha’s Magazine Platform. An anime adaptation by J.C. Staff aired in 2024, but a second season hasn’t been announced yet. While the original series was animated by A-1 Pictures and highly praised, this sequel anime received criticism for its animation quality and there’s been no news about continuing the anime. However, fans have reason to be excited as the manga celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, with several new projects planned.
Fairy Tail Will Return With New Projects in 2026

ACG Labo Shop, a store that sells merchandise from events at its Harajuku gallery and select Marui locations, just announced a partnership with the anime Fairy Tail to celebrate its anniversary. From January 9th to 20th, a special Fairy Tail pop-up shop will be held in Shibuya, Tokyo. Currently, the event is exclusive to fans in Japan, but more exciting news for Fairy Tail fans is on the way.
Hiro Mashima’s editor shared a post from ACG Labo Shop about an upcoming event. They then reminded everyone that 2026 will be the 20th anniversary of Fairy Tail and promised to share details about related projects on their account soon.
Although the official 20th anniversary isn’t until July, the celebrations are already starting! A new illustration by the creator, Mashima, was released on January 7th, 2026, featuring the main characters – Natsu, Lucy, Grey, Wendy, Happy, Carla, and Erza, who is proudly holding the anniversary flag. Reaching 20 years is a huge accomplishment for a manga, and it looks like the series has plenty of exciting things planned for its fans.
Following the release of the 20th anniversary artwork, Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima posted on X (formerly Twitter) to thank fans for their support over the years. He announced that there are many exciting plans in the works to celebrate the milestone and encouraged fans to stay updated.
Fans are excited about the upcoming anniversary and are speculating about what will be revealed. So far, only a special video and a pop-up event have been announced. While the original story is finished, there’s a possibility of new projects like a movie, spin-off show, or a continuation of the anime. Plus, since the sequel series is still in production, we might also get some new anime updates this year.
