Fans can now watch a popular magical girl anime series on Netflix, just as the franchise is gearing up for a new movie. Netflix is set to have a packed January, with both new anime releases as part of the Winter 2026 season and a wave of classic shows being added to its library. Many of these classic series are also being revived with new projects.
The anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica is once again available on Netflix. After being removed for several years, it’s been added back just in time for fans to rewatch it before the highly anticipated new movie releases – a project that’s been in the works for almost 15 years.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a standout magical girl anime, largely because it subverted many of the genre’s typical tropes when it debuted in the early 2010s. Originally airing in Japan in 2011, the series was an original creation by studio SHAFT and writer Gen Urobuchi. It centers around Madoka, a young girl who encounters a mysterious creature offering to grant her any wish in exchange for becoming a magical girl and battling enigmatic enemies.
The series quickly proves to be far more complex and emotionally powerful than viewers initially expect, which explains its lasting popularity. It features some truly surprising and heartbreaking moments, and by the end of its twelve episodes, it solidifies itself as a genuine classic. This success led to several follow-up movies, spin-offs, and other related projects, and now a new film is being developed.
What’s Next for Madoka Magica?

The movie Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising is expected to come out in Japan this February, though an exact date hasn’t been confirmed yet. The film has faced several delays in the past, so it remains to be seen if this release timeframe will hold. The original creative team, Magica Quartet, is working on the movie, with Yukihiro Miyamoto directing for studio SHAFT. Gen Urobuchi wrote the script, Ume Aoki designed the characters, and Yuk Kajiura composed the music.
The voice actors from the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime series are back for the new movie, Walpurgisnacht: Rising. Aoi Yuki will reprise her role as Madoka Kaname, along with Chiwa Saito as Homura Akemi, Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami Tomoe, Eri Kitamura as Sayaka Miki, Ai Nonaka as Kyoko Sakura, Kana Asumi as Nagisa Momoe, and Emiri Kato as Kyubey. If you’re new to the series, you can find it on Netflix to get a feel for the story.
