A Bethesda game from 1996 unexpectedly received an update recently, in 2026. While Bethesda is now famous for games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, they also created some popular games in the 1990s, particularly first-person shooters like Quake, DOOM, and Wolfenstein. If you’re a fan of these older Bethesda titles, this new update might be of interest.
A recent update to the PC and Steam versions of the classic game Quake now includes official support for the Steam Deck. This means the game runs smoothly on the Steam Deck from beginning to end, automatically optimized for its controls and screen – players don’t need to adjust any settings themselves. Valve has confirmed this improved compatibility.
One of the Great First-Person Shooters
If you somehow haven’t heard of Quake, it’s a groundbreaking first-person shooter originally released in 1996 by id Software and GT Interactive. It’s highly acclaimed, with a Metacritic score of 94, and is considered one of the best games ever made. The version available on Steam isn’t the exact 1996 release, but an improved version that maintains the original feel while adding modern features. These include support for 4K and widescreen resolutions, better character models, more realistic lighting and colors, smoother graphics, and a greater sense of depth.
Honestly, I’m not sure why id Software decided to verify the game on the Steam Deck now, or exactly what they did to make it work so well. But hey, it’s the first update we’ve seen for the PC version since 2022, so that’s a win!
This recent activity might hint at future developments for the game, though it’s currently unknown what those might be. The Quake series hasn’t been very active lately, and there’s limited interest in revisiting the original game. It’s more probable that this was a small, personal project undertaken by some developers at id Software. We’ll be sure to share any further details as they become available.
