Josh Brolin And Benicio Del Toro’s 10/10 Action Movie Deserves Its Netflix Success

While Sicario: Day of the Soldado isn’t quite as good as the first Sicario movie, it still earned its popularity on Netflix. By the end of the film, it becomes clear that a sequel couldn’t have matched the original, and ultimately, that doesn’t detract from its enjoyment.

While not as good as the 2015 film Sicario directed by Denis Villeneuve, Sicario: Day of the Soldado is still a remarkably complex and thoughtful action thriller. It does stray from the original’s nuanced moral questions, opting for a more dramatic and less realistic plot.

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado Is A Decent Sequel To Villeneuve’s Masterpiece

Despite its imperfections, Sicario: Day of the Soldado is still an exciting and thrilling experience, much like other TV shows created by Taylor Sheridan. The film reunites Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin from the first Sicario movie, but Emily Blunt’s character doesn’t appear this time around.

The new movie, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, shifts away from the first film’s critical look at the ethics of US government involvement in the drug war. Instead, it focuses more on portraying the agents as heroes. Viewers hoping for the same kind of sharp social commentary as the original Sicario might find this sequel less impactful.

If you’re looking for a simple, exciting action movie, you’ll probably enjoy the sequel, even though Sicario: Day of the Soldado doesn’t explore the same thought-provoking themes as the first Sicario. The original film hinted that US involvement might actually fuel the drug trade, but the sequel is more of a straightforward, enthusiastic endorsement of agencies operating outside of official government control.

Why Denis Villeneuve Didn’t Return For Sicario: Day Of The Soldado

While not as deep or intricate as the first Sicario, Sicario: Day of the Soldado is still an exciting and enjoyable thriller. Though both films were written by Taylor Sheridan, the sequel seems to lack the directorial touch of Dennis Villeneuve, who helmed the original.

I was really disappointed to learn that Denis Villeneuve wasn’t involved in the Sicario sequel, Day of the Soldado. He was tied up with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 at the time, so it makes sense, but his vision was definitely missed. While Day of the Soldado is a good action thriller on its own, it just didn’t have the same impact or depth as the first Sicario film he directed. You could really feel the difference in quality.
