While movies like Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda are DreamWorks‘ most popular films, the studio has made many other great animated movies that don’t get enough credit. Recently, Peacock added one of DreamWorks’ most overlooked films to its streaming library, and it’s definitely worth watching.
DreamWorks’ animated film Abominable, released in 2019, is now available to stream on Peacock. The movie tells the story of Yi, a teenage girl voiced by Chloe Bennet, who discovers a Yeti on her Shanghai apartment building. She and her friends, Jin and Peng, then go on an exciting adventure across China to help the Yeti return home, all while trying to stay one step ahead of a rich businessman and a persistent scientist who both want to capture him. You can also find the Abominable and the Invisible City spin-off series on Peacock.
Abominable Is the Best DreamWorks Movie You Haven’t Seen
Simply put, Abominable is a fantastic movie that doesn’t get nearly enough attention, and that needs to change. It has everything that makes DreamWorks films so successful – beautiful animation, a touching story about friendship and family, and a sense of adventure – but it also offers a fresh perspective through its unique cultural setting. It’s a beautiful, emotional, and exciting film, and many have compared its sweet story of a child befriending a monster to Steven Spielberg’s E.T. – making it enjoyable for everyone.
Despite earning $188 million worldwide – placing it among the lower-performing films for DreamWorks – Abominable is actually one of the studio’s best-reviewed movies. It boasts an 83% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making it DreamWorks’ 18th highest-rated film and surpassing popular titles like The Croods, Trolls, and the first Madagascar movie. Audiences also loved it, giving it a 95% “Verified Fresh” score – the second-highest of any DreamWorks film, tied with Spirit Untamed and The Bad Guys, and only behind The Wild Robot. Film critic Christopher Lloyd of The Film Yap described Abominable as “a surprisingly sweet and lyrical tale that will connect with your soul,” and Hoai-Tran Bui of Slashfilm praised it as a classic story of a girl and her monster, reminiscent of the whimsical style of Studio Ghibli, and featuring impressive animated flying scenes comparable to those in How to Train Your Dragon.
Other Family-Friendly Movies Now on Peacock
Peacock is building an even stronger collection of family entertainment. In January, the streaming service added the animated movie Abominable along with several other popular DreamWorks films, like the entire How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, Shark Tale, and Shrek Forever After. They also included the classic animated film All Dogs Go to Heaven and the fun ‘90s comedy Little Giants.
