Hellblade Dev Plotting a More Gameplay Focused Successor, Presumably for PS5

When Ninja Theory announced Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, it was expected to be a significant game only available on Xbox Series X|S, following the popularity of the first game on PlayStation 4.

The game was eventually released on the PS5 as Microsoft adjusted its plans for consoles. However, it didn’t receive much positive feedback, mainly because it was short and didn’t offer a lot of gameplay.

We’re now hearing that a new game in the Hellblade universe is in development. It’s currently unknown if this will be a direct sequel, Hellblade 3, or a separate story within the same world.

According to Jez Corden of Windows Central, who discussed it on the Xbox Two podcast (as reported by Metro), this is the source of the information.

Ninja Theory, the studio behind the new game, wants this installment to be more engaging and allow players to do more than just watch the story unfold. Previous games prioritized storytelling and graphics, but this one will likely feature a more complex and involved combat system, similar to what the studio created in games like Heavenly Sword and DmC: Devil May Cry.

Considering Xbox now often publishes games on platforms other than its own, it’s likely their next game will be released on PlayStation 5 (or potentially even PlayStation 6, if development takes a while) at the same time as on Xbox.

Corden also reports that Ninja Theory seems to have put Project Mara, their previously revealed experimental game, on hold. The studio is now concentrating all its efforts on the new Hellblade game.
