The MCU Just Officially Got Way Closer To Sue Storm & Namor’s Controversial Marvel Story

Recent Marvel movies and TV shows have had varying levels of success with both critics and audiences. This has prompted Marvel Studios to rethink its plans for the current storyline, culminating in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The studio is hoping this large-scale event will revitalize the franchise and recapture the excitement of earlier Avengers films. A key part of this effort is the surprising return of Robert Downey Jr., but this time he’s playing the villain Doctor Doom instead of his iconic role as Iron Man.

To keep excitement high for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios has started a huge marketing push, releasing four different teaser trailers almost a year before the movie comes out. These teasers have already confirmed Chris Evans will return as Captain America, hinted at what’s coming for Thor, and brought back the original X-Men cast. This week’s fourth, and possibly last, teaser focuses on the kingdom of Wakanda, and suggests we’ll see a meeting between Namor and Sue Storm in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday shows M’Baku as the current king of Wakanda, following the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Wakanda is still secretly allied with Talokan, the underwater kingdom ruled by Namor. But the biggest news is the first encounter between Wakandans and the Fantastic Four, who have arrived on Earth-616 after traveling through the multiverse. While fans are excited to see Shuri and Reed Richards work together, the trailer hints at a meeting between Sue Storm and Namor. This is a particularly big deal for comic book fans, as these two characters have a complex and often contentious history that the movie will need to handle carefully.

Why Is the History of Namor and Sue Storm So Controversial?

For decades, dating back to the early days of Marvel Comics, there’s been ongoing friction between Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, and Namor, the King of Atlantis. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Namor has often been portrayed as romantically interested in Sue, creating a rivalry with her husband, Reed Richards. While this dynamic was intended to add drama to the Fantastic Four’s adventures, it frequently relied on outdated and sexist ideas. Many older storylines showed Namor disregarding Sue’s feelings and marriage, often trying to force her to be with him. These plots tended to treat Sue as a possession fought over by two powerful men, rather than as a character with her own goals and desires, which makes revisiting this history challenging.

The debate around Sue Storm and Namor stems from how different comic book writers have portrayed Sue’s feelings towards him over the years. Although Sue is consistently dedicated to her family, some storylines hint at a hidden attraction to Namor, which is troubling. This unintentionally validates Namor’s harmful actions towards Sue instead of condemning them. Marvel’s biggest challenge with these characters in the movies is recognizing their existing history while avoiding the problematic tropes from the comics. By introducing them during a large-scale conflict in Avengers: Doomsday, the filmmakers have a chance to reshape their relationship and distance it from the more damaging parts of their comic book past.
