It’s no surprise the Switch 2 was a hit when it came out last year – sales have been strong even with the current economic climate. While the new console is a significant upgrade over the original Switch in most ways, many noticed the new Joy-Con 2 controllers are less colorful than the first generation. Luckily, Nintendo has just announced some new color options for the Joy-Cons, offering a bit more variety for players.
I’ve been a Nintendo fan since the beginning, owning every console they’ve released – especially as a Pokémon player who wants to experience each new game. But beyond the great exclusive games, I’ve always appreciated how much fun and creativity Nintendo brings compared to other consoles. The GameCube’s quirky purple design was a perfect example! So, I was a little disappointed when I opened my Switch 2 and saw its more subdued grey and black color scheme – I really miss the bright, colorful Joy-Cons. I got excited when I heard Nintendo was releasing new Joy-Con colors, but honestly, I was let down when I saw them.
Nintendo’s New Joy-Cons Are Technically Different Colors, If You Squint

The new Joy-Cons for the Nintendo Switch 2 do come in different colors than the original ones. However, the color change is so slight it’s difficult to notice. When attached to the console, you really have to look closely at the area around the joystick to see the new light purple and light green shades compared to the original red and blue. It’s pretty funny how subtle the difference is, especially since a new pair of these controllers costs $100.
I’m honestly really bummed about the new Joy-Con colors. That light green and light purple combo is gorgeous – seeing them on the Joy-Cons with the straps attached makes me wonder what could have been. It reminds me of being a kid and picking out a new Game Boy just because of the color! I just don’t get why Nintendo didn’t actually make these new colors more vibrant and fun. It feels like a missed opportunity!
While some players prefer a more understated design, when a new set of controllers costs $100, most people would expect a noticeable upgrade. I, like many others, am careful with my spending, but vibrant, full-color Joy-Cons – similar to the original Switch – would be hard to pass up. These new controllers are almost identical to the ones included with the Switch 2, with only very subtle color variations. To release a product with such minimal changes is a pretty daring decision.
These New Controllers Feel a Lot Like Trying to Sell Us the Same Thing Twice

Nintendo used to release different colored Joy-Cons for the original Switch, and those actually changed how the whole console looked, even when it was plugged into the dock. But honestly, seeing this first glimpse of a “new” color for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons feels a little… lazy. It feels like they’re trying to get us to buy something we already have, just in a slightly different shade.
Honestly, I’m a little puzzled by these new Joy-Cons. The color difference is so slight, I’m not sure who’s really going to splurge on them. They are my favorite colors, but I’d mostly just be seeing them when I’m using the straps with Fitness Boxing 3. I can only think of two reasons to get them. One, if you need an extra set for playing with friends, it’s cool to have a different color. And two, if you’re already buying a new set, why not get some variety? It’s just…the difference is really, really subtle.
Another reason for these new Joy-Cons? If the ones that came with your new Switch 2 break. Joy-Cons can develop issues like drifting or simply wear out over time, and that’s a possibility. However, since the Switch 2 just launched, it seems odd that new Joy-Cons are already being released. Plus, these new colors aren’t very vibrant, which feels like a strange choice right now.
Nintendo is expected to release new Joy-Con controllers, and hopefully, they’ll be more colorful than the current ones. It’s surprising how similar the new designs are to the originals, but they’re still pretty neat. If you’re interested, the Light Purple and Light Green Joy-Cons are available for pre-order now on Nintendo’s website and will be released on February 12th.
What do you think of the new Joy-Con 2 design, which features colorful highlights instead of being entirely one color? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
