Nintendo has just released the first firmware update of 2026 for the Switch 2. Since the console launched last year, Nintendo has been consistently providing updates – some with big changes, and others more minor. This latest update falls into the latter category, meaning users shouldn’t expect any significant new features or alterations to how the console works.
I just downloaded the new update, 21.2.0, for my Nintendo Switch 2, and honestly, it’s exactly what you’d expect. It doesn’t add any big new features, but it makes the system run smoother and more reliably. Nintendo’s released tons of these kinds of updates for the Switch 2 already – and even on older consoles like the original Switch and Wii U – so I’m not surprised. I’m sure we’ll see plenty more updates like this throughout the Switch 2’s lifespan, and that’s a good thing!

As we look ahead to 2026, we can expect to hear more about the next version of the Switch. 2026 looks like an incredible year for anyone who owns a Switch 2! Nintendo is planning to release a lot of exciting games, starting with titles like Mario Tennis Fever, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream in the coming months.
