Over the years, many HBO shows have captured the public’s attention, but few achieved the massive popularity of Game of Thrones. That show dominated conversations, though its ending remains controversial for some fans. Now, we’re back in the world of Westeros with the prequel House of the Dragon, and the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. I was already excited to watch the latter as part of my HBO Max subscription, but recent comments from author George R.R. Martin have made me even more eager to see it.
Details about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are scarce, but the HBO premiere should answer some of our questions. House of the Dragon reignited my love for this universe, and I’m excited to see how this new series builds upon it. During an appearance on the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms podcast, George R.R. Martin mentioned a significant difference for the upcoming show, stating:
I aimed to tell a story centered on the common people – those who weren’t nobles and had no real chance of ever claiming the Iron Throne, unless something catastrophic happened to everyone else in Westeros.
I’m really excited about the new show! While House of the Dragon gave us a glimpse of common people, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will truly center on the lives of those outside the royal family. These characters aren’t vying for the Iron Throne – they’re the everyday people who suffer the consequences of power struggles. The show will follow Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, as its main character.

HBO Max offers streaming access to popular shows like Game of Thrones and its spin-offs, with plans starting at $10.99 per month. A subscription includes thousands of movies, TV shows, documentaries, and more. See the deal here.
There will still be royal characters in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. A Targaryen will even be Duncan’s squire. However, the story won’t focus on families battling for control. George R.R. Martin also explained that adapting the book will be different from the Game of Thrones books, stating:
When I started writing Game of Thrones, I followed the perspectives of seven or eight different characters, switching between them frequently. As the series continued, I added even more viewpoints. This created a complex story where different characters experienced and interpreted events in their own ways. However, writing a shorter work like a short story or novella, which focuses on a single character’s point of view, is a different experience and can be incredibly impactful.
We’ll need to watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to get a clear idea of how tightly focused the story will be. While Ser Duncan will likely be a main character, it sounds like the series will have a more limited scope than Game of Thrones. After hearing George R.R. Martin talk about it, I’m even more excited to see this Game of Thrones prequel on my TV!
As a huge fan of the series, I’m really excited about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! It’s set to premiere on January 18th, 2026, and from what I’ve heard, it’s going to offer a fresh and unique perspective on the world of Westeros – something different for those of us who’ve been following the story for a while.
