The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to get third screen adaptation with new “heightened relevance”

Sky has announced a new TV series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, fifteen years after the film featuring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig came out.

The new eight-episode series, from the creators of shows like The Crown and Dept Q (Left Bank Pictures), will adapt the popular novels by Stieg Larsson.

The new series offers a fresh, modern take on the Millennium story, staying true to the characters and investigative spirit of Stieg Larsson’s original novels while exploring themes that feel particularly important right now.

Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series—three bestselling novels—centers around Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist, and Lisbeth Salander, a skilled computer hacker. The books have been a global phenomenon, selling millions of copies worldwide.

The popular novels by Larsson were initially adapted into a Swedish film series with Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace. Later, in 2011, David Fincher directed an English-language adaptation of the first book, featuring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as the main characters.

In 2018, Fede Álvarez directed a sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, based on a 2015 novel by David Lagercrantz that continued the story begun by Larsson.

Variety previously reported that Amazon was developing a TV series focusing on Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The series would have featured a fresh storyline, location, and supporting cast, but ultimately it wasn’t picked up for production.

While the actors haven’t been revealed yet, the new Sky series will start filming in Lithuania this spring.

Steve Lightfoot (known for shows like The Punisher and Behind Her Eyes) and Angela LaManna (The Haunting Of Bly Manor, Behind Her Eyes) are writing and executive producing the new series. They’ll be joined by executive producers Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips from Left Bank Pictures, as well as Sam Hoyle representing Sky.

Viewers in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria will be able to watch the series on Sky. Sony Pictures Television is in charge of distributing the series internationally and has already begun seeking buyers in the US.
