Since Disney bought Lucasfilm and began creating new Star Wars films and series, the franchise has had its share of successes and disappointments. A standout achievement is the series Andor, a thrilling drama that went beyond being just a Star Wars prequel to become one of the best TV shows in recent years. Led by showrunner Tony Gilroy, Andor captivated both dedicated fans and newcomers with its powerful, emotionally resonant stories, exciting action, excellent acting, and grand scale. Many feel Andor took what’s considered Disney’s strongest Star Wars film, Rogue One, and made it even better by adding layers of detail and complexity.
The TV show Andor was widely praised by critics and won many awards, including an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series. However, many fans feel its talented cast – including Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, and Genevieve O’Reilly – didn’t get the Emmy recognition they deserved. Only Forest Whitaker and Alan Tudyk received Emmy nominations for their roles in the show. Luckily, one of the best films of 2025 is now giving one of those overlooked performances the attention it deserves.
Stellan Skarsgård Is a Best Supporting Actor Favorite for Sentimental Value

Stellan Skarsgård had a remarkable 2025, appearing in the highly anticipated second season of Andor as Luthen Rael. He also starred in Joachim Trier’s critically acclaimed drama, Sentimental Value. In the film, he plays Gustav Borg, a well-known director who tries to cast his daughter in his newest movie. Like Andor, Sentimental Value received overwhelmingly positive reviews, boasting a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It even earned a historic moment at the Cannes Film Festival with the longest ovation since 2006, demonstrating its powerful impact on audiences.
Similar to his role in Sentimental Value, Stellan Skarsgård is receiving widespread acclaim for his emotional performance in Andor. However, this time, his work is generating significant awards buzz. He recently won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, marking his first Golden Globe win for a film role. He had previously won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work on the television series Chernobyl. In fact, many believe he deserved to be nominated for supporting actor awards in both film and television this year.
While Owen Cooper’s win is well-deserved, Stellan Skarsgård’s performance in Andor was truly exceptional and deserved more recognition. His character, Luthen, quickly became a standout in the Star Wars universe – a key figure in building the Rebellion who wasn’t afraid to take drastic measures. The depth of Luthen was further enhanced by his relationships with characters like Cassian Andor and Kleya Marki. Skarsgård’s captivating presence commanded attention in every scene, delivering some of the series’ most powerful and emotional moments. It’s fantastic that Diego Luna received Golden Globe nominations for both seasons of Andor, but Skarsgård’s performance was equally deserving of the same honor.
Although many Star Wars fans were disappointed that Stellan Skarsgård wasn’t nominated for Andor, he’s now receiving widespread praise for his work in Sentimental Value. He’s already won a Golden Globe and an award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and he’s a contender for an Oscar nomination. While the Best Supporting Actor category is very competitive this year, Skarsgård is a well-respected actor with a strong career, and Oscar voters may feel he’s due for a win, despite missing out on an Actors Awards nomination.
