Streaming services are constantly changing what’s available, and Peacock subscribers are about to experience that firsthand. One of the most popular horror series ever will soon be leaving the platform. While Peacock started the year by adding lots of great movies and shows – including titles like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and The Shining – fans should watch this horror series while they still can.
The Saw movie series has been a huge success, earning over $1 billion at the box office and becoming one of the top five highest-grossing horror franchises ever. However, fans who want to watch the first nine Saw films on Peacock need to act fast! They’ve been added to the list of movies leaving the streaming service soon. Luckily, the newest film, Saw X, is still available. While it’s not clear exactly when the original nine movies will be removed, titles in that section usually disappear by the end of the month.
Saw Is a Horror Masterpiece That Redefined the Genre
As a huge horror fan, I think it’s impossible to talk about 21st-century horror without mentioning the first Saw movie. It’s crazy to think it only cost $1.2 million to make, but it went on to earn over $103 million worldwide – proving you don’t need a huge budget to make a hit! What really stood out to me was how gritty and realistic it looked, especially compared to some of the more slick horror movies at the time. It totally changed things, moving away from the typical slasher films and diving deep into psychological horror. It even kickstarted the ‘torture porn’ trend, though for me, the brutal traps weren’t just about shocking the audience. They were a way to really explore what people are capable of when faced with a life-or-death situation – the will to survive is a powerful thing, and Saw really put that on display.
While critics were divided on the original Saw (it has a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the film kickstarted a trend of gritty, low-budget horror movies in the early 2000s and launched a hugely successful franchise. Later Saw films became known for their extreme violence, and while their quality is often debated, they’ve been very profitable – Saw III earned a worldwide gross of $163 million. Even after more than twenty years, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down. In June, Blumhouse Productions bought the rights to Saw, including all future content. This deal brings original creators Leigh Whannell and James Wan back to oversee the franchise’s direction.
Where to Stream the Saw Franchise After It Leaves HBO Max?
Considering how popular the Saw movies are, you’d think they’d always be easy to find on streaming services. However, most of the Saw films will be hard to watch after they leave Peacock. While Saw X will likely stay on Peacock and Spiral: From the Book of Saw is also available on Hulu, the rest of the series currently streams only on Peacock. Once they’re removed from Peacock, your only options will be to rent or buy them – unless another streaming service picks them up.
