As a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings, it was so cool to hear Viggo Mortensen talk about his favorite scene from the trilogy – can you believe it’s been 25 years since the first movie came out? Seriously, Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Tolkien’s books felt like a once-in-a-lifetime event. I don’t think we’ll see another fantasy film have that kind of impact on movies and pop culture again anytime soon.
To mark the 25th anniversary of Fellowship of the Ring, Empire magazine spoke with the actors and filmmakers behind The Lord of the Rings films, looking back at their impact. This included conversations with Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn, and Sean Bean, who played Boromir, about their experiences working together on the first movie.
A particularly powerful moment featuring Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn is Boromir’s death scene in The Fellowship of the Ring. Sean Bean, playing Boromir, bravely attempts to shield the Hobbits from the Uruk-hai sent by Saruman (Christopher Lee). Following this, Aragorn shares a touching farewell with Boromir, a scene Mortensen considers his favorite in the entire trilogy, calling it “such a beautiful scene.”
The actor shared that a particular scene was his favorite, even compared to other parts of the film series. He explained that what made it stand out was its simplicity—it didn’t rely on special effects or fantastical creatures. Instead, it focused on the powerful connection between two characters who, despite having a shared heritage, had previously been in conflict. He felt their eventual connection was especially strong.
Bean agreed with his co-star, adding, “Yeah, it was a great scene together.”
This scene is a key moment for Aragorn. It’s the one and only time Boromir refers to him as “brother, captain, and king.” Many believe this is when Aragorn truly begins his journey from being a simple Ranger to becoming the King of Gondor – a crucial leader in the battle against the evil Sauron and a significant figure throughout the history of Middle-earth.

Though Aragorn’s story concludes in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, fans might see more of his earlier character, Strider, in Andy Serkis’ new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. It’s unknown if Viggo Mortensen will reprise the role, but he has said he’d be open to returning to Middle-earth, according to his Instagram account.
It’s possible they’ll cast a younger actor to play Aragorn, and rumors suggest this is being considered. The new film will take place right before and during the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories, Gandalf asks Aragorn to find Gollum, hoping to stop him from revealing the location of the One Ring to Sauron’s army as Gollum travels from the Misty Mountains and through other lands.
So far, Andy Serkis will return as Gollum and Ian McKellen as Gandalf for The Hunt for Gollum. There are reports that Elijah Wood may reprise his role as Frodo, but he hasn’t confirmed it yet. Regardless of who stars in it, The Hunt for Gollum shows how much Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings continues to resonate with audiences.
