Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have a lot to look forward to this year! The original series is coming to Paramount+ this fall, and a new animated show, Avatar: Seven Havens, will explore the world after Korra. But that’s not all – creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are also developing another series that revisits a beloved supporting character from Aang’s adventures – someone who played a key role in defeating the Fire Nation.
A new three-issue comic series, Avatar: The Last Airbender – Kyoshi Warriors, will continue the story of Suki and her team as they battle Ozai and the Fire Nation. Published by Dark Horse Comics and launching on May 6th, the series follows the Kyoshi Warriors as they leave their island to aid the Earth Kingdom in the war. According to the publisher, they’ll face prejudice and have to prove themselves, leading to a difficult question: how far are they willing to go to achieve victory? The series is created with the approval of the original creators, Konietzko and DiMartino, and is written by Brandon Hoang with artwork by BellBessa.
Avatar’s Kyoshi Warriors Return
The Kyoshi Warriors are a well-established group in the world of Avatar, first appearing in Season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Suki, the leader, is their most famous member, and she eventually becomes Sokka’s girlfriend. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Suki has headlined her own comic book!
In 2021, Dark Horse Comics published a graphic novel called Avatar: The Last Airbender – Suki, Alone, which tells the story of Suki’s imprisonment in the Fire Nation’s Boiling Rock prison. The graphic novel focuses on Suki’s struggle to maintain hope while imprisoned and how she builds relationships to survive. It expands on moments that weren’t shown in the original Nickelodeon animated series.
Whether Suki will appear in the new animated series is a separate question. As of now, she hasn’t been confirmed to be in The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, which will show the original characters as adults. The show previously established that Sokka and Suki were a couple at the end of the original series, but it never confirmed if they stayed together long-term. We may finally get a definitive answer when the new series premieres later this year on Paramount+.
