The last thing Ben Affleck wants is to control his kids’ futures.
The Academy Award-winning actor shared that he and his former wife, Jennifer Garner, don’t want their children – Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13 – to become actors themselves.
As a longtime fan, I was really touched by what Ben Affleck shared with TopMob News at the premiere of The Rip. He and Matt Damon were talking about the challenges of raising kids when you’re in the public eye, and Ben explained it’s tough. What really resonated with me was his emphasis on wanting to give their children the space they need to discover their own paths and figure out what they want out of life. It’s so important to let them be themselves!
I wouldn’t want to pressure them into that career path. They’re incredibly talented and wonderful people, and we’re so proud of them,” he said, adding with a touch of humor, “but we hope they find something fulfilling to do with their lives, even if it’s not acting.
Matt Damon recognizes how fortunate his children are, benefiting from the successful careers of both him and his wife, Jennifer, as well as the opportunities afforded to the four daughters of his friend, Ben Affleck, and his wife Luciana. However, he remains thankful for the way he himself was raised.
Ben felt that their humble beginnings – struggling in relative obscurity – were ultimately a positive thing. He said it was almost a blessing to have started from such a remote and unknown place.
Samuel and Seraphina are currently focused on their studies, but their sister, Violet, is already making a difference as an activist. A recent highlight was her powerful speech at the United Nations, where she spoke about the need for continued mask use and improved air quality after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking to the UN in September, she pointed out the irony that while leaders often say young people are the future, the current pandemic is taking away our present opportunities.

She expressed her optimism for the event and her faith in the community, believing we’re capable of achieving great things again. Just as we naturally accept clean water as a basic need, she argued we should also recognize clean air as a fundamental human right.
And Ben and Jennifer—who were married from 2005 until 2018—couldn’t be prouder of their eldest.
The actress from 13 Going On 30 said on Live with Kelly and Mark in 2023 that her daughter is very independent and she’s incredibly proud of her, regardless of what she does.
The Rip premieres Jan. 16 on Netflix.
