The anime version of Kei Urana’s Gachiakuta, originally published in Weekly Shonen Magazine and animated by Bones Film, was a standout debut in Fall 2025 – many considered it the best new anime of the year. While Bones Film’s excellent animation was key to its popularity, the strength of the Gachiakuta story itself is what truly makes it special.

Many viewers expected Gachiakuta to follow the usual patterns of shonen anime. But it quickly became clear that this series was different. As the story unfolded, it consistently broke from those traditional shonen tropes, establishing itself as a fresh take on the genre. Here are three key moments that really highlight just how unique Gachiakuta is.

3) Gachiakuta Breaks the Shonen Genre’s Battle Tropes

Though Gachiakuta stood out as a unique series, its early battles seemed to follow typical fantasy tropes, featuring characters with magical abilities. However, the anime pleasantly surprised audiences by showing that its fights, despite these fantastical elements, often feel surprisingly realistic. A prime example of this can be seen in Episode 18, specifically during the fight between Riyo and Noerde.

The fight starts like many shonen anime battles, with both fighters using their standard abilities. However, things change dramatically when Noerde gains the upper hand in close combat. Unexpectedly, Riyo pulls out a gun and immediately wins the fight. This surprising move highlights how Gachiakuta balances its intense action with a sense of realism, making it different from most shonen shows.

2) Zanka Not Receiving a Heroic Moment After His Backstory Shattered Shonen Tropes

As a huge fan, I always come back to Zanka and Jabber’s fight – it’s seriously one of the best in the whole series! What makes it so great is how much they built it up from the start. Jabber was presented as this natural genius, while Zanka was all about dedication and effort, which immediately made their fight personal – Zanka had everything to prove! When Jabber actually beats Zanka, knocking him out cold, the story brilliantly shifts to Zanka’s past, setting the stage for what felt like an inevitable, awesome comeback. It’s classic shonen done right!

Despite having a moving and impactful past, Zanka doesn’t manage to fulfill his potential. Rather than demonstrating that dedication can triumph over natural ability, he continues to struggle. This unexpected turn emphasizes the series’ realistic and often bleak outlook, highlighting that even strong feelings and hard work aren’t always enough to conquer life’s difficulties.

1) Gachiakuta’s Rudo Defies the Typical Shonen Hero, Defining a New-Gen Series

Rudo Surebrec, the main character of the series, immediately establishes himself as a unique shonen hero, making Gachiakuta stand out as something fresh and original. He’s different not just because of his quest for revenge and strong personal motivations, but because of one particular scene that truly showcases just how unconventional he is.

I was really taken aback in Episode 12 when Rudo, now free from Amo’s curse, just relentlessly attacked her. She was completely defenseless – unarmed and already in the Cleaners’ custody! It’s not something you often see in shonen anime, a hero so brutally beating someone who can’t fight back, and especially while fully aware of what he was doing. It really highlighted just how driven Rudo is, and how far he’s willing to go to achieve his idea of justice. That moment felt like a turning point, solidifying Rudo as a genuinely different kind of shonen protagonist and marking Gachiakuta as a series that’s doing something new.
