Previously, Nicholas Hoult appeared as Hank McCoy/Beast in four Fox-produced X-Men films (and briefly in Deadpool 2). Given that Marvel Studios is bringing back some actors from the Fox X-Men series for their upcoming Avengers movies, there has been speculation about whether Hoult will join them. During a promotional tour for Superman, Hoult and his co-star David Corenswet underwent lie detector tests for Vanity Fair. At one point, Corenswet asked Hoult if playing Lex Luthor might affect his chances of rejoining Marvel, to which Hoult replied that it wouldn’t – largely because he never anticipated returning in the first place.
Secret Wars cameo, Hoult replied, “I honestly didn’t have a big chance in the first place.” The polygraph reader verified that he was telling the truth. Laughing, the actor added this statement.
Initially, Hoult brought Beast to life in 2011’s “X-Men: First Class,” and subsequently played the role in three follow-ups. His final portrayal of the character was in 2019’s “Dark Phoenix.” In the past, Hoult has shown interest in reprising his role as Beast within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but so far, nothing has materialized. With actors from the Fox era set to appear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” Marvel Studios is reportedly planning a new X-Men series that seems to be casting a fresh team. Recently, Elle Fanning was speculated to be a contender for Jean Gray’s role.
Kelsey Grammer is slated to portray Beast in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday“. Previously, he played this mutant character in “X-Men: The Last Stand“, and more recently made a brief appearance in the post-credits scene from “The Marvels“. In May, Grammer disclosed that he hadn’t received a complete script for “Doomsday” yet, due to Marvel Studios’ reputation for keeping things under wraps.
In today’s world, where comic book adaptations are abundant, many actors have graced both Marvel and DC productions. However, it’s rare to see an actor appearing in simultaneous projects from both universes. Houlton first stepped into the DC Universe with his role in Superman, and while his character’s future appearances are yet to be confirmed, it seems likely he will reappear in more projects. The DC Studios have a 10-year vision for their franchise, and Lex Luthor is one of DC’s iconic villains. It would be disappointing if this version of Luthor was only seen once. Even if Houlton might be hopeful about his prospects for Secret Wars, his commitment to Superman and the DCU might make it difficult for him to participate. There isn’t much historical evidence of actors appearing in Marvel and DC films concurrently.
It’d been exciting to witness James McAvoy reprising his role as The Beast in the MCU, but he’s found success in the DCU instead. His portrayal of Lex Luthor was captivating opposite Corenswet’s Superman, staying true to the character from the comics, and we can’t wait to see more of him in future movies. Meanwhile, Marvel fans will have another Beast to appreciate when Doomsday premieres next year – one who’s beloved despite limited screen time. Watching Kelsey Grammer return as the mutant is likely to be among the film’s many standout moments.
